What is the difference between XM and Sirius? Not to derail your thread AB, but I'm considering getting sattelite radio and was wondering this. What made you decide on XM?

Two competing services with two completely different sets of programming.

I like Ethel, I think it's channel 47. It's a pretty good alternative station - not too hard, and they mix in a lot of obscure stuff.

I also like Lucy, which is similiar, but with a stronger lean towards older (Smiths-esque) alternative rock. You're more likely to hear stuff like the Cure or Joy Division on Lucy. I think. The "genres" are a little fuzzy sometimes. ;)

Music Lab is a good experimental station. My father in law loves it. It's a nice diversion sometimes.

UPOP is kind of cool cause they play a lot of international pop music. Sometimes it sucks though cause they play stuff like Clay Aiken, too. It's hit or miss.

Top Tracks and Deep Tracks are good if you like classic rock.

Anyway, that should be a start on recommendations.

Actually, there is a Fred. :( It's very similiar to Lucy.

Having done some research, it turns out Fred is supposed to be "classic" alternative, and Lucy is supposed to be G.O.A.T. alternative.

I agree with everything here. I listen to 20-22 (pop stuff), 29 (UPOP), 44-47 (rock of varying forms), 53-54 (Punk station and Lucy), 95-102 (Latin Jazz, World, Jamaican, African Pop) and 155-156 (MTV&VH1) mainly. I then have the other six pre-sets on sports talk, political talk, news, etc..

Ethel is by far my favorite though.

My favorite channel is the 90's channel. I try to figure out what grade I was in when the song came out. Oh, I am getting old.

    AB,

Is there any reason why I haven't heard you on the Comedy Station, channel 150? I keep waiting to see Billy D. Washington adorn my stereo!

I have XM and I'm all over the stations on it. I probably listen to 10-20 of them on and off. Comedy stations are great. The 80's and 90's stations are, too. I listen to the dance stations 80-82. And of course Sporting News and ESPN stations.
