I agree with you on that but in his case he lacks basket ball IQ and fundamentals from what ive read, he is a big time project i would pass.
With the right coaching you never know. Andrew Bynum was raw and had Kareem as a coach. Hassan is currently working with Hakeem on his game. If the scouting report says that he is not improving his basketball IQ and will be like a Stromile Swift then I would pass on him as well. Which big man do you think we have a chance for and that you would pick? Or are saying you would not draft a BIG at all?
im not saying that im just thinking that we are not out of the woods with kevin martin since he just got back from an injury and have yet seen him play an entire season, so its not like drafting henry is a dumm move, i mean if any of the other bigs are still on the board i would go for them, im just not sold on whiteside though.
Ok that sounds fair and logical. There is also a possibility since we have alot of SG/SF that if Morey drafts another SG/SF he maybe moving either that player he drafts or a Battier and someone else via trade to get a back up for Yao.
another reason why i think the rockets WILL NOT draft whiteside is because morey and his side kick sam hinkie are stats guys "wizards" in that department they look at numbers and what not.
What about Donte Greene? I see this draft as a rare opportunity to draft a big and the rockets lack of size and length when Yao is out has gotten real old. Im tired of the layup drills and the drafting of midget 4s and 5s. Watching the finals should prove size matters.
Dude im tired of the lay up drills my self and i get your point im with you but most of the big men playing in the finals were not drafted by their team lamar odom, gasol, garnet, and Rasheed were aquired via sign and trade or trough free agency.
Yes, Yao's always injured, but no big in this draft will adaquately replace him. You always draft the best talent. Seattle was drafting busts for years because they needed a center. One of them had a 7'8" wingspan, for crying out loud. I don't think any of them are in the league anymore. This is a deep big man draft. But if all the good ones are gone by the time we pick, I fully trust Morey to make the right decision.
We're not trying to replace him. We're looking to add depth at that position, and Yes I agree we should go after the best player available, but the thing is the best player available will most likely be a big man... --RB
Please explain your logic. The BPA would NOT be a big man because of all the Big men projected to be drafted early. If anything the BPA will be a PG (Bledsoe) or a SG (Henry) who when they were recruited were thought to be top 10 lotto picks but because of all the early entry Big men they all falling.
At #14 there probably won't be a big man contributor to choose from. Maybe one or two if we're lucky. You don't think other teams want size, too? Even if we move up, the best player might not be a big. If we had the #7 pick last year would you have taken Jordan Hill over Steph Curry, even though we have an good PG in Brooks?
Not looking to replace you cuz it can't be done, just don't want to see a 6'5 center next year and the team needs some rim protectors in the worst way. Most of the quality size will be gone by the time the rockets draft, so it may be worth their while to move back and take a flyer on a big and pick up an extra asset.
Henry can shoot, but i dont think his trigger is quick enough...he also has this habit of running into players and bouncing off. I think its due to his inability to blow by defenders completely and having an attraction to drawing contact. But which came first? And i dont think the contact he draws will result in fouls a majority of the time, so it'll just get him in a bad position fading/bouncing away from the defender. He's shown he can make those shots, but i dont think i'd want a guy who depends on that. In high school it's easy to get away with it. In college he didnt play long enough to know if teams would adapt to it. In the NBA teams may adapt to it after 2 years or so..
If we do end up keeping the pick, I have a feeling that whoever we get will be someone that no one wanted originally, and we'll all be pretty let down by the morning after the draft. You know why? Because that's how I've felt every year with a Morey draft. It's a sobering thought to realize that there will be NO gratification the day after the draft. Our gratification comes during the regular season when our rookies show up. So far really the only draft pick we've had that had fan support before it happened was Budinger, and we waited until midway through the second to pull that trigger. So I guess we'll see if Morey does actually pick one the fans want. Surely he doesn't base his decisions on being unexpected: we all wanted Kevin Martin and Ron Artest and voila! like a prayer answered they were in Rockets jerseys sooner or later. The one guy I said in another thread I could see dropping to us and having us pick up would be Ed Davis. He just has no momentum right now going into the draft.
The problem I have with this whole BPA thing is how do you know who the BPA is? Do you have some sort of crystal ball that will show you 10 years from now who the best player available at the position is? Most people who say BPA do it from hindsight, i.e. the Blazers should have drafted Jordan over Sam Bowie. At the time Bowie was drafted though, people didn't know Jordan was going to be one of the GOATs while Bowie would spend his entire career injured. Yet they go nodding and saying "Yep, the Blazers should have gone BPA." The truth is, you don't know how Xavier Henry or Bledsoe will pan out in the NBA.They have a lower bust factor than Whiteside, Cousins et. al, but at the same time they have a lower ceiling too. Picking them doesn't mean you were going for the BPA, just that you have a lower risk tolerance. It doesn't mean you were picking BPA, it just means you were more conservative. By this logic the Rox should have chosen Jay Williams over Yao Ming. Unfortunately Williams' career was cut short by injury so we'll never know how good he can become however I find it hard to believe he would have been better at his peak than Yao Ming in his prime.
If we get Bosh it's almost guaranteed we would be including our pick in the package. If we don't get Bosh we can keep the pick for ourselves.
BPA is a philosophy, or a way of doing things. You take the BPA, regardless of position. For instance, if we think we have to get a big, but we have the first pick, and we can't trade it for something we like, by the BPA approach, we still take John Wall. As for how you know who the BPA is, it's the same way you know anything. Lots of guys pick women to marry that they think are going to work out, and they don't. Still, you use your best judgment; nobody's going to be right all the time, and a lot of the picks turn out to be disappointments. Being conservative is a whole 'nuther thing.
Nope. After the NBA draft, it's a not a pick any more. It could be a future draft pick like the Toronto trade of T-Mac to Orlando.
