Man Goes for Guinness Longest Hair Record

Tue Jun 22, 8:07 AM ET

HANOI, Vietnam - A Vietnamese man who hasn't been to a barber in 31 years is vying to get in the Guinness World Records for having the longest hair, state-controlled media reported Monday.

Tran Van Hay's hair is 20 feet long, Thanh Nien (Young People) newspaper said.

Normally tied up and covered by a scarf, his hair has grown four feet in the past seven years. He last had it washed six years ago, the paper said.

Hay, 67, is a traditional medicine practitioner from southern Kien Giang province, some 220 miles southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. He provides free treatment to villagers in the region.

The Guinness Web site says the current record for long hair, set in 1997, is held by Hoo Sateow of Chiang Mai, Thailand, at 16 feet 11 inches.

    Largest Chest Measurement
Big boy Robert Earl Hughes, who was born in 1926 in Illinois, started bursting his shirts as a toddler. His parents worked hard to keep him clothed and fed. They watched their son double his weight more than four times from the age of six to the age of 25 – from 92 kg to 406 kg (203–896 lb). At his death in 1958 he topped the scales at an amazing 484 kg (1,067 lb) and was buried in a coffin the size of a piano case.

    Longest Concert by a Group

The Grand Boys played for a record 42 hr 38 min from February 20–22 2004 at Smith's Restaurant, Stirling, Scotland, UK. The group – charity fundraisers – opened their record-breaking set with an apt song: Dedication, the theme tune to the classic BBC Record Breakers TV show by Roy Castle!
"It was a long hard slog which left us with sore fingers, no voice and extremely tired," say the band on the website. "But content!"

The Grand Boys are: Paul Bromley (drums, bass), John Griffin (guitar, vocals), Bob Kelly (lead guitar, bass, whistle, vocals), Robert Kelly (lead guitar, bass, vocals), Alan Marshall (guitar), Adrian Robertson (bass, lead guitar, vocals), Colin Sinclair (accordion), and Alan Stewart (drums).
