lol. it's for good fun, Sam. I think you're very serious about your opinions, and I certainly respect that.

Now let's hope Yao and the Rockets win the "WORLD" Champions--I don't think anyone here would have a problem with that title when that happens, huh? :D

Yes, but is that "refusal to submit/concede " based on an entirely objective assessment of the two team's strengths (I concede our firm team is inferior to the Spurs)?

OR, at least in part, a wounded sense of national pride? (we're not playing second fiddle to some big rich american team -- American even though their 3 main players are 1. Virgin Islander; 2. Argentine; 3. French, and also have an extra Argentine, and a Slovenian on their roster) ?

Just because somebody won't concede it - doesn't make it NOT true. I'm sure you could find a Lawyer's league fool who thinks he/they can take Tony Parker to the rack. Hell I bet The Professor and the And-1 team think they can run the Spurs given a chance. But that doesn't make it true.

Yeah, they have no power because their best players go to the NBA, and because very few American players go over there. If they kept them and attracted some American stars perhaps they legitimately could - but they don't, so they can't.

hey, our crappy lawyers league team would like a shot at the Spurs too. We've got a guy from the Xerox room who can dunk. But I wouldn't bet on that either.

i can understand basketball using it. Not really baseball, but the NFL has no place calling the winners of the Super Bowl WORLD CHAMPS. Football is really only an American sport

Why not? According to Sam's logic, the NFL is the best football league in the world. And the CFL champ is the world football champ under Canadian rules. And Japan's Sumo champ is the world champ no doubt.

I agree, why not? I'd certainly have no problem with any of that.

PS they do have "international" level sumo but it's just not on the same level as the big Japanese basho's - where they DO let the gaijin compete - begrudgingly, if they can make it through the miserable life of a sumo apprentice. For that matter though, I don't know if there's a "championship" basho - there's a bunch of major tourneys but I don't know if one is considered the real championship.
