I broke my foot a few months back and have had a hard time coming back from it. I'm trying not to put too much strain on my foot as it was a navicular stress fracture (top of foot). Any ideas on cardio/workouts without placing too much pressure on the feet? I've put on some weight and need cardio badly. Anyone ever tried pilates? Yoga?
i did a lot of hopping up and down stairs when i was one-footed for a few months.. not for exercise, but that's what it ended up being. i hated crutches, too, so i hopped around even more. That's a lot more cardio than you might expect
Pilates generally won't do much for your cardio. Also there are a number of Pilates exercises that will impact your foot. How about a rowing machine?
Fractured my foot during a marathon a couple years back, definitely have to keep the stress off of it as it's the only way for it to heal. I don't recommend Yoga as some of the poses require you to balance yourself on one foot which will put all your body weight on it.
Damn. So Pilates and Yoga use the foot. Swimming is good but it still bothers my foot if i'm kicking constantly and it is without my air-boot. I'm trying to eat less but I feel my energy level crumbling without as much food and the workout high I get. Maybe I'll just start lifting weights more, though I don't want to get bulky
Perhaps another thing to do, other than a rowing machine, would be to use an elliptical, but just use your arms for the movement.
You can still get a pretty good cardio workout and keep weight off just by lifting weights. You don't have to do heavy lifting if you don't want to bulk up ... just use moderate weight on everything and do 8-12 reps on each set.
I'm surprised no one suggested this was Yao... and do not hop on one foot for extended periods of time, avoid it if you can...i did that for about a month, maybe more, after a severe ankle sprain and started playing ball and didnt use crutches....it'll over strengthen your stabilizers on that side and when you heal that side will stay overactive and screw up your balance. why have you had a hard time coming back? Has it not healed?
At Lifetimes they have a hand pedal machine, you sit down and work the bicycle like pedals with your hands. I did it a lot on it after my foot surgery. You can burn as many calories as you want on it, you can up the resistance.
This. If you're not in a cast, try the pool. Also, core work can get your heartbeat up and get you sweating in a hurry. Take an AB class or try pilates.
How much stress is put on your feet on a rowing machine? The times I have done it (not many), it seems I was able to tailor the workout to mainly use my arms and upper body and let my legs go along for the ride.
