I best HOU is only a backup plan if Lakers would not offer Bynum because (a) Jimmy Buss irrationally loves Bynum or (b) they don't want to offer Bynum for a rental.

Howard has made clear in recent days his desire to join the Nets for their first season in Brooklyn, indicating he would only commit to a long-term contract with them, and not with any other team. Would the Lakers risk dealing Bynum, just 24 and a one-time All-Star, for Howard, hoping a year in L.A. could persuade him to change his mind? Before the Magic would agree to consummate a trade for Bynum, they would need to know they could sign him to a contract extension, sources said. Bynum is entering the final year of his contract in the 2012-13 season. What’s more, Bynum wouldn’t nearly be enough to satisfy Hennigan’s desires for a return on Howard. The Lakers would need to send draft picks and absorb long-term money off the Magic’s payroll, sources said. ...isn't the contract issue the same for Orlando trading for Bynum? Bynum would be a rental unless he agrees to hang around a rebuilding franchise or try to compete with a team clearly not good enough with a better player than him.
A lot of moving parts there. LA would likely want an extension from Dwight. Orlando wants an extension from Bynum. Orlando wants the 25th+ picks from LA. Orlando wants LA to take back Hedo or Richardson(aren't the Lakers looking to cut cost?)

That could be an issue, especially considering Dwight doesn't want to play with Kobe (I don't blame him). Here's a little something, I don't even know if the rosters would match up: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=85uwb9v Obviously, Lakers would give first rounders and get an extension to Bynum (which I doubt he would give). This might be the best deal for the Magic, they'd be dumping two bad contracts and getting back a young center + picks. The hawks get better (a Gasol-Horford frontline is nasty) and while this would be expensive for the Lakers, a rotation of: Dwight/Pachula Smith/Davis Artest/Turkoglu Kobe Blake Is pretty damn good, both now and moving forward once Kobe retires.

According to Jalen Rose, Howard wants to go to a city where he could establish a legacy WITHOUT the pressure of having to live up to an established legacy. That's why he wouldn't go to LA and wants to go to NJ.
