Hi guys the other day I bought a netgear wireless router on amazon. So now the router is connected to my cable modem, and my desktop is connected to one of the ports in the router. Great... I can post here and surf the web on my desktop, and I can do work all around the house on my thinkpad, which has wireless built in. Question is... how do I start password protecting my wireless network? I don't really want people to use my network and see my stuff. So I need to turn on a WEP or a SSID? Or something? How do I do that? Also, I want to access the files on my destop from my laptop. All my music is on my desktop, I don't want to move it to my laptop because technically it's a work machine. But I want to you know listen to music and maybe watch my Yao Ming video clips when I'm working in the kitchen. How I can do this? Computer gurus please help.
1) Update the firmware on your router to the latest version (go to Linksys site or use the update feature which may be in your router's setup page) 2) Only allow MAC addresses within your network access to the router 3) Use static IP's as opposed to IP ranges and DHCP 4) Make sure you have enabled encryption. WEP encryption is weak and easily broken, but it's better than nothing. If your router supports WPA encryption, it's much better. 5) Disable router administration via wireless if you can do so. 6) Don't broadcast SSID and change the default SSID. 7) Change the admin username/password for your router from the default to something else that's not too obvious, but not something so wild that you forget.
thanks... but when i don't broadcast the SSID my laptop can't find the network anymore... and when i turn on the encryption, it generates this long ass passcode... am i going to have to enter that in every time? that's gonna be a pain.
also, i did the limit the wireless cards that can log in by MAC address... i added my laptop to the list... that should be good enough right?
