Anyone here using Windows XP? I typically go with Linux, but I haven't put it on my new Athlon XP machine yet. Windows 2000 has run perfectly for me UNTIL Saturday night. I decided to play a DVD and Windows 2K magically rebooted, then wouldn't boot again. I was able to reinstall (recovery didn't work), but my registrey was gotched up, so I figured just to do a format and reinstall with XP . . . So far, I don't know what I think of it. It looks nice, but it annoys me. It also seems to take total control of everything, and it's a pain in the a$$ to get rid of all the MS idiot settings. The whole feel of the system is weird, and it seems to have this sterile feel to it . . . I've set it up about how I want it, but I still am not fully impressed . . . it's not bad, but I'll give it time to impress me. What do you think of it?
For the average user it's Windows 2000 with a lot more Microsoft annoyances. If you have it, you may as well install it. If you don't, I wouldn't exactly be clamoring to get it... I've been using it for a while now and well... its color scheme is hideous! So I changed it... outside of that, I can't see any other reason to say it's a must-get/must-use.
Win 2k over XP any day. XP actually sucks up your bandwidth, and does not have all the drivers ready for it yet. DaDakota
It's nice but I dont think its worth the upgrade from 2000. I mean $200 for an upgrade WTF?!? That is such a rip when there is next to no difference in functionality.
Well, I have 200 more 3dMarks, which is nice Honestly though, I don't think I'd use it if I were a system builder. It's got all kinds of weird stuff that just confuses the end user -- even the novices. Stuff kindof happens on its own, and even though it's intended to be good for those who don't know much about PCs, it just makes the whole process more difficult and confusing. I may keep it though . . . I really liked 2000, but when it crashed, that sucked. I really just need it for gaming though -- I'm gonna pick up a new HD soon, and that'll be my Linux drive.
Tecnnically, you're right. I haven't had any problems with Win2k... haven't even had the thing crash on me yet. But then that's what it's supposed to do, right?
It boots up faster, and for me, that's worth the price of admission. I had a few problems at first, but that was before the new detonators came out, and for some reason, it didn't like the "bundled with XP" printer drivers for my brother laser jet. Now it's as stable as a rock. Dr. of Dunk or DaDakota; I can't remember which, but one of you has the Klipsch multimedia speakers, as do I. I had a soundblaster live! 5.1 + mp3 driving them, and for some dumb reason, I splurged and bought an Audigy Platinum. Best thing I ever did; it's ridiculous how much better my sound is now. If you feel like splurging on something nice for Christmas, I highly recommend the audigy. I haven't figured out but about 5% of what it will do for me, but so far, I love it!
Yeah, the drivers have been a tremendous pain in the ass. I like XP though; unlike Windows 98, it seems like they really were trying to make a better product.
It's faster for me than 2000 was..... Stability? There were a few issues with the drivers, but nothing updating them didn't fix.
I have the Klipsch 4.1's and bought an Audigy... I live in an apartment and am on Christmas vacation now. Needless to say I have the walls rocking with this thing. Yes, they sound awesome!
I used Win98 before XP; I definitely think it's better than Win98. Win98 would've crashed about 40 times on me by now. The stability of XP appears to be rock-solid at the moment. I haven't had a big driver problem yet. The one thing I hated was having to make sure some of the freeware or shareware I download was XP compatible. Many Win2k-compliant software is XP-compliant (if you don't count things such as disk utilities), but I didn't want to take a risk, so I look for "Win-XP supported"-type labeling.
Actually, this is a good point. It is the one area where I have noticed a huge improvement. Boot-up time is WAY faster in XP than in the Win9x series or Win2k. Now I don't know how much that's going to slow down once I have a ton of crap added and deleted from the registry 6 months from now, though.
what video card are u running?? i've got a viper v770 ultra, and the same thing happened to me, and every now and then happens again (though not as often as b4), and when it does, it'll reboot 3-4 times like u said.. and nvidia's drivers apparently aren't logo certified, so that hasn't been helping.. have u been able to solve this issue??
There is a tweak to get rid of that bandwidth suck . . . but why it's there in the first place is kindof beyond me . . . more M$ garbage drivers were my fear, but so far I've been fine. The fact that it does all kinds of weird stuff on its own is very bothersome, and leaves me feeling as if I'm not in control at all . . . It is better than the consumer Windows OS, although Win ME was very crash-proof. Really, for me it's a question of Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional. I was really impressed by 2000, and my bootup time was about the same in each -- maybe a bit faster in 2000, but I may just be dreaming. Although 200 more 3dmarks are VERY NICE
for me that would not justify it's cost. Saving what maybe 1-2 minutes every month is not worth the $200 price tag.
Good catch. But it was before I entered the game... check the post time. Don't mess with me Zac, I know where you chat!
