September 2004 Security Update for JPEG Processing (GDI+)

in a nutshell... if you have WinXP and haven't installed SP 2, you must now do this (although I haven't yet) because Windows has released a new update that corrects an exploit with the .jpeg file extension and you must have SP2 to install it.

From the GeekMouth Blog "A properly encoded jpeg would allow a malicious individual to gain control of a Windows computer. This jpeg could be on a web page or contained in an email"

more info can be found here - Newest vulnerability from Microsoft is - jpegs?

or do you think it's a conspiracy by Microsoft to get us all to install SP2?

I'd also like to ask those of you who have installed SP2 how it went? Did you have any problems with any particular programs after installing SP 2? Any problems at all?

Thanks... I think I may want a Mac now. :(
    or switch to Linux!

no problems with SP2... the built in pop-up blocker on IE is pretty sensitive, and blocked out some sites that even the google toolbar missed (and some ones that shouldn't have been blocked).

Also, the firewall doesn't really interfere with anything that I know of... if you really know about firewalls, then chances are you've probably got one installed already.

I also noticed an improved wireless internet interface.

I hate SP2. It has caused tremendous slowdown in all of my P2P file sharing programs. Even with the so-called "firewall" turned off.

I had that problem with Kazza and Diet K but not with Winmx. I downloaded and installed SP2, restarted my computer and Kazaa would not start up. Know what I did? I simply downloaded Kazaa and Diet K again, installed them, and it worked fine. Try that...

There's no freaking doubt there are people who created Norton Anti virus or Microsolft also creates virus. Well my computer been working pretty fine for the last couple of years without the need of SP2. You just have to be careful that's all and have the latest patch to keep out virus. I'm not going to installed SP2 yet since I heard it messes up other programs or softwares. I'll wait until programs and softwares and SP2 is fully reliable until I install them.

I would recommend NOT installing SP2 if you're doing it just because of this exploit. I've known about this exploit for several months now, and it remains to be seen how dangerous it is.

SP2, on the other hand, has been shown to be terrible. Microsoft really needs to do some more work before I'll install SP2 for any reason.

If you're computer savvy, I would suggest against installing their "fixes." Several of them are their own kind of spyware, updating or sending pockets of information for thier consumer marketing statistics.

Also you can install individual fixes within the SP packages and try to target which ones slow you down and which do not.
