al-Quaida troops headed to Cuba

Why are we bringing al-Quaida prisoners to within 100 miles of our borders???? I hope those troops are trained to shoot to kill, cause if these prisoners escape they'll be knocking on our doors!! Cuba probably has people who would be sympathetic to an anti-American cause!?

I don't know... just thought I would throw this out...

----
U.S. troops head to Cuba
Fort Hood soldiers will help operate detention unit

excerpt:
The first of 300 military police and troops from Fort Hood along with troops from other U.S. bases left Sunday
for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to prepare for the arrival of al-Qaida and Taliban war prisoners.

The U.S. troops will set up and operate a maximum security detention facility for as many as 2,000 inmates.

I think they want to keep them away from the "lynch mobs," so the more remote the better. It could get really ugly. On second thought, why not send them to Huntsville?!

Boy do I feel dumb! Looking at that map I see that I was WAY wrong about the size and proximity of Cuba. I though it was much smaller and and a greater distance from our shores. I can't believe everybody made such a big deal about Elian Gonzalez. His ma should have just thrown him from the beaches of Cuba to Key West!

No need to bring them to the Continental US for the military tribunal and other investigative matters.

Cuba is more accessible than the early site of Wake Island.

As the article points out, certain locations work better in regards to the American legal system.

Esape?

Doubt it very seriously. The prisoners will have been thoroughly searched before they have been loaded for transport and it is doubtful that Castro will intercede on their behalf.

In the 50's there were plans in place to build a bridge from Key West to Cuba which were only derailed by the Revolution.

I don't see, however, how I could in good concience enjoy some lavish vacation in Cuba considering how oppressed the people are. How can you enjoy spending American cash in a country where is is illegal for the residents to own cash?

Whatever good intentions Castro may or may not have had in the '50's, clearly he's now flogging a dead horse, ignoring his peoples best intrests either for pride or simply because he only cares for himself. It's the conservitave-vaues equivilant to a visit to South Africa in the '80's.

rH: It's well isolated from the main body of Cuba because for 40 years Castro has been putting up blocades to provent his people from escaping to the US. These barriers are, naturaly, bidirectional

Actually if they were tossed into gen-pop in one of the maximum security lockups near there, I'm sure justice would be served.

First group of detainees leaves Afghanistan for Cuba

(CNN) -- A U.S. C-17 jet left the airport in Kandahar, Afghanistan Thursday, carrying the first group of al Qaeda and Taliban detainees to the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
CNN's Bill Hemmer, at the airport, reported the 20 hooded and shackled detainees were brought out in two groups of 10. Security was tight, with each detainee searched before being put on the plane, then chained in their seats.

Enemy gunfire erupted as the plane took off Marines responded with M-16 rifle and machine gun fire, and two U.S. Marine Cobra helicopters lifted off as tracer fire criss-crossed the north end of the airport. The gunfire ended shortly after it began.

The detention facility at the airport has become crowded with more than 350 detainees in U.S. military custody there. The detention facility at Guantanamo, still under construction, will eventually be able to accommodate up to 2,000 prisoners.

Transporting the prisoners is considered so dangerous that the Pentagon had said it was considering sedating them during the 8,000 mile flight.
