Who here owns a T-Mobile G1? What have you done to modify it? I have rooted the phone and updated to the 1.5 build (cupcake) and well as installed the radio build. I have also setup apps to SD card. With all the capabilities of the phone, I am really glad I purchased it. This phone gets better every day.
I upgraded to 1.5 without rooting, via the alternate UK update version. I didnt wanna take the risk of rooting (although the JF versions of android look sick with the multi touch) I figure I might try those out after 1.5 releases and I boot back to the original T-Mobile USA update. As for the phone, I don't see any reason to have any other phone ever. As long as they keep added little perks here and there, they've got me hooked. Has everything I need and more. I can whip it out at anytime anyone has a question about anything, movies, food, etc and answer them within a minute. I don't like the new Android phone prototypes/designs floating around though (G2/Bigfoot/Morrison/etc). Alot of people complain that the G1 is too bulky, etc and the new Android models are less bulky cuz they get rid of the slide out keyboard, which to me was a BIG selling point over the iphone.
Got one since March, love it, have no complaints, haven't got cupcake yet, waiting on the official release, as far as saving apps to the SD card, is that included in cupcake? or do I have to homebrew that? I had that I have about 10 apps installed and only about 20 MB of free memory.
I recently read on The Internet (so it must be true) that the most popular hand held game console is the G1, hacked to be just a game console. Very popular in third world countries. HTC is printing money.
i like that it is bulky it fits in my hand well please inform me on what the 1.5 build is and how will i benefit from it
I had the G1 for about 5 days while I was getting a new Iphone. I honestly couldn't stand the phone. It had some nice features but the battery life sucked and i hated the keyboard. It boggles my mind whey they didn't make the whole front face slide up instead of cutting it off where the buttons are. It limited the reach i had with my thumb on the right side if i wanted to type sometimes. i have gone through almost everyone phone out there from HTC, Palm, etc and I still have to say the iPhone is by far the best I have used. Yes it lacks some basic things but it has been ahead of the rest in my opinion.
I'm waiting for the official US release to update my G1 to 1.5. Would the JF version be better? It has multi touch? There's no mention of multi-touch in the official Cupcake release. Multi-touch on maps and browser (ala iPhone) would be very nice.
i believe they have to come up with their own style of multi touch because apple patented theirs if i am not mistaken.
Rooting can be pretty nerve racking, but if you follow the steps that you can find online, you can get it done. Once you root the phone, a whole new world opens up...multitouch, apps to sd card, the newest cupcake features, and simple updates to new hacks!
Apps to SD is only for rooted G1's. I have about 50 apps and 35 mb free of internal memory. I know that the Delvik Cache is eating up around 30 MB of internal memory. Once I get a class 6 MicroSD and partition it, I will save the Delvik Cache to the sd card as well an have about 60mb of internal memory available, although I can't think of what I would need that much memory freed for...
Unless your reasonably knowledgeable in some sort of computer programming/customizing type of things (messing with windows and the like) you might wanna stay away from rooting as you may void your warranty and brick (kill) your phone. However there are multiple tutorials out there on the internets that you can look into for step by step or youtube as well. Give it a look through and see if you can hang. I'd advise just waiting since 1.5 should be out next week anyhow. But if your like me and really got tired of waiting, but didn't want to root your phone, then you can download the UK Released version of 1.5 (which'll work on your phone without rooting, albeit minus myfaves, voice search). Basically it has lots of updates that fixes certain bugs and adds new features like "live folders" and an on-screen keyboard. The official T-Mobile update should come sometime next month.
Battery life is an issue, but I have GPS and Wifi turned off until I need them. I use an app to manage it easily (useful switchers). I ususally get a full day out of the phone. Charge at night and when I'm travelling in the car for good measure. I've never had a problem typing on the qwerty unless it is plugged in. My biggest beef is the speaker on the back of the phone and no standard headphone jack, but with bluetooth stereo, that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Damn I want the apps to SD card feature. I don't use the memory card for crap. There's gotta be way to get it to work without rooting. 1.5's main benefit for a casual user (like myself) would be the bluetooth stereo, better image capture and better gps. I'm surprised no one uses pdanet. Tethering is probably one of the greatest things I've seen in awhile. I hope it can bring consistent 3g speed to my netbook. Can't wait for the official release.
