We have Vin and Spoon's deals to play with. We will also have some spare parts to throw into a deal - Wesley, possibly Sura, whatever. Can we take on another team's problem, if they package it with something we want? Benefit : we pick up a player we want, and can exceed the MLE to do so. Cost : we get a bad contract. Upside : Maybe JVG can get more out of that bad guy here, esp if he fills a position of need. Upside : We still have our MLE to spend on another target. Here are some examples with power forwards we have discussed. Portland comes to mind with, say, SAR and Derrick Anderson or Ruben Patterson. Portland needs to rebuild. We take DA/Patterson, they sign and trade us SAR. Toronto has bad contracts for Rafer Alston, Jalen Rose, Alvin Williams. They are rebuilding. Perhaps we could cut a sign and trade for one of those with Donyell Marshall. Memphis has some bad contracts. We could try to take on Lorenzen Wright or Bonzi Wells or Jason Williams with Stromile Swift. You could even call a guy like James Posey or Brian Cardinal overpaid. They might regret those deals. Please post other potential targets of opportunity. Who else needs expiring contracts to get rid of players?
http://bbs2.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?threadid=96193 I'm not sure it would be a great idea to s&t for Donyell Marshall...I'd rather get him with the MLE or not at all. There is a better chance at him getting a bigger/longer contract ina s&t.
Memphis seems to have the most players of quality, but I find it difficulty to see a trade happening where we obviously get better on the court, and they obviously get worse, given that we are in the same division, just so they can improve their cap. They will need to do something eventually, but not with us.
Some quick thoughts. Don't forget we still have a trade exemption that allows us to take on a player equal to or less than that amount, not sure how much. First SAR, Swift and DM are unrestricted FAs. We don't have to take on bad contracts with those teams to pursue them and don't think I want to. Portland can facillitate a S&T or lose SAR for nothing, same with Memphis--though I think they may require Swift to negotiate with non-Texas teams. As for as SAR you could do Spoon + picks (future 1st + NY 2nd?) for SAR signed at like 5/40 mil. Present Portland with the "lose him for for nothing" or take it scenario (really depends more on SAR/his agents convincing Portland of this). I guess SAR + DA/RP for Spoon/Baker (or iF the TE could take on RP) would also be appealing for us--but we provide less pick compensation there. To me using expiring contracts to land our PF is most relevant for PFs signed longer term (inflated contracts), who are old, or teams wanting more immediate relief. Guys like PJ Brown, Kurt Thomas, Lafrenz, Murphy, Joe Smith, Brian Cardinal, Marc Jackson, Ralif, Kenny Thomas, or possibly Boozer are more plausible in this scenario. Personally, with the SAR, Swift, DM and Evans out there possibly for the MLE and the MLE limits keeping costs down, rather than take on bad contracts through our expiring contracts to find our PF I think I'll take my chances 1st in FA.
We used a fair amount of that in the Mike James deal. I think there is only around 1.5M left of the TE which likely will go unused.
per http://bbs2.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=81993&perpage=30&pagenumber=4 the TE is = the value of half of Francis' max salary(since it was Baseyear) approx...5.4M my concern is that it expires one year from the completion of the TMac trade...I sure hope CD is working on using it real soon or it will expire. Deuce, you sure about that? I dont remember hearing about that...thought it was just Gaines and a couple of picks.
IF we could sign and trade for SAR, i would rather do that, and use our MLE elswhere on another need. I would definitely consider that. Anytime you have a chance to trade your garbage for some quality, you'd have to think long and hard about it. Although, i wonder if the rockets could facilitate a deal like this: To Rockets: SAR Derek Anderson To Portland: Spoon Moochie Norris 1st round pick I don't mind giving up draft picks. This franchises' drafts over the last 10 years have been nothing short of abysmal. Other than Yao in 2002 and Cuttino in 1998, they have gotten nothing out the draft.
thing is .. these type of trades are generally only done near the trading deadline. so we need to be patient. no team is going to trade for expiring contracts and officially give up on the season until theyve played atleast half of their season.
I'm sure the Lakers are looking for expiring contracts. They have only 3 long term contracts on their payroll (Kobe, Odom, and Grant). If they find someone to take Grant off their hands, they'll have a lot of cap room next summer. Caron Butler and Brian Grant for expiring contracts perhaps? Golden State will definitely be looking to unload Foyle and Fisher. Maybe enough to include Pietrus or maybe even Dunleavy in a package. Perhaps the Pacers would throw in Fred Jones if we took Croshere's contract off their hands. Detroit will have to resign Ben Wallace next summer and they're probably looking to move Darko into the rotation next season, so Mcdyess might be available for an expiring contract (Wesley?).
The TE was involved. Gaines made 1.2 mill, while James made 3.1 mill Because Zendon Hamilton was a minimum salary player, we lost the difference between James and Gaines for the TE- in other words, we have about 3.5 mill in a trade exception left. I'll add some expiring contract thoughts later.
The best S&T I like is SAR for Spoon + a pick, Secondly is SAR for Howard straight up. This would reserve our MLE for youth in the backcourt. Bobby Simmons anyone? Other teams that might need expiring contracts are any way over the cap next year and rebuilding - maybe the Knicks, Phili, Orlando, Lakers, Sac-Town.
Desert Scar: I don't think I would be too happy if the Rockets signed SAR with the full MLE, much less 5 years/40 million + draft picks.
6 years 37 mil (full MLE if the CBA is the same) would be one of the all-time MLE steals for a 28-29 year old PF of SAR's productivity. If we can get in, great, but that is way below market value.
This will NEVER work... just ask yourself this... if you owned the Portland Trailblazers would you make this trade???
depends on how much they want to freeup money....they haev the option of losing SAR for nothing as it is...instead of losing him for nothing, they get contracts that will be expiring...plus a pick. Ive seen stranger things happen trade-wise when expiring contracts are involved... NIKE...thanks...Dont remember hearing it mentioned at the time...and I wasnt sure of the money involved...could have checked...but..hey...Im lazy. so...there is always the chacne of finding a backup somewhere worth 3.5 that someone doesnt want anymore....unlikely IMO...seems to me they let that expire.
Or, we can trade one of our expiring contracts for a deadweight contract plus a useful player making 3.5 mill or less (like a guy on a rookie contract). Some other thoughts of mine from the original post... Stay away from Toronto. At this point, I wouldn't touch Alston, Williams, or Rose unless they seriously made it worth our while (Peterson AND Marshall). Memphis- Wright is an expiring contract himself, iirc. Take him out of the equation. Wells is a team option that won't be taken, so he'll be a free agent it looks like. New Jack brings some interesting possiblities with the Lakers (I like Butler). For the Pacers, apparently Bender is considered a waste right now- perhaps Spoon for Bender may be worth the gamble, aand would only add a year. I disagree on McDyess- Pistons didn't sign him to such a huge deal to move him. Golden State is interesting- they have over 50 mill committed for the next 4 years, so I'm sure they'd love to get out of some commitments. I'd probably demand Dunleavy AND Pietrus in order to take on Foyle. That contract is nasty. Murphy is certainly intriguing- I see him as one of the closest things to the Rockets' ideal 3rd option PF. Portland is the team I target. Out of our division at least, and they have athletes galore. Miles or Patterson could certainly fill minutes and are not really wanted in Portland. They'd certainly give away DA for expiring contracts, and picking up SAR or maybe even Damon Stoudamire may be worth our while in a sign and trade.
Some of ya'all need to re-think this expiring contract thing. Right now, the Blazers have $52.2m in committed payroll for 2006-07. Doing a SnT for Abdur-Rahim and an expiring doesn't give them a nickels worth of Summer '06 cap space when they are already at $50+m. Is paying Spoon for a year and giving him a roster spot worth a #20+ 2006 draft pick? Highly debatable.
I think they would certainly think about it. Derek Anderson has a horrible contract and is basically just sitting there on their bench so its not like he is part of their rebuilding plans. Also instead of losing SAR for nothing they get a 1st round pick out of it. So a year from now they have alot more cap space with Anderson gone (or someone like D. Miles) and an additional 1st round pick. From the Rockets perspective this is a great trade. We get a legit 3td scoring option behind our big two and someone who can also rebound the ball as well. Anderson gives us the athletic SG that we need (assuming he can stay healthy) and it allows us to bring Wesley off the bench. The Rockets will also still have the MLE so they can go out and sign someone at the PG position if they feel like they need an upgrade at that position (not sure how they feel about the Sura/James combo). A bench with James, Wesley, Barry, Howard, Deke, and our 1st round pick could hang with any bench in the league. And a starting 5 of Sura/Anderson/T-mac/SAR/Yao is both athletic and can score with any team in the league.
