thumbs, the great thing about Landry is that he was a 2nd round pick. No need to cut him, just dont sign him and we retain his rights. Landry can then go where ever he wants in order to fine tune his basketball skills until he is ready for our roster...1,2,3 years later or never, we still hold his rights.
yes, thats why the d-league is there! he wont be on the team. in the summer league he wasnt impressive. mike was more impressive lol
Agree. However, weslinder specifically said "Lucas, Landry, Bonzi, Novak, and Sura should definitely be cut." That's why I was so astonished. Sura (trade/cap savings) and Lucas (second rounder trade bait) won't even be "cut" for the reasons indicated in parentheses. Cut means some other team can have them.
I like your list. Personally I wouldn't resign Hayes but the Rox seem to love him and I think they will resign him. Snyder would have to be the odd man out. As much as I love Harris I wouldn't sacrifice a talented shooter like Novak without giving him a chance to succeed or fail at least for a year. Novak stays over Harris in my book.
hayes will resign. but i would love to see him packaged with head, rafer and a pick for haslem novak will stay and harris is on the bubble
this is easy starter Yao Scola Battier T-mac Francis bench Bonzi James Deke Hayes (assuming he's re-signed) Head Snyder Brooks reserve Novak Butler Landry Rest Newley - be to aus Sura - trade Mike Harris - waive Reed - trade or waive Alston - trade Lucas - trade or waive
The Rockets are in avoid luxury tax mode. They won't be trading for players. If they can get someone to take on Lucas's or Novak's salary, they should. By the way, none of this was what I think will happen. Bonzi will probably make the team. It just won't take long to regret it.
For the first time, I'm starting to come to the realization that the Rockets will finally allow Bob Sura "retire". It has become quite obvious that the Rockets are stacked with roster-caliber players and are more desperate to minimize their luxury tax exposure than to add more quality to the roster at this point. And with all the money Les Alexander has spent this offseason, I don't blame him. I had been hoping for quite a long time to use Sura's contract in a package for a good, high-salaried player. However, with the trades/signings of Mike James, Luis Scola and Steve Francis, the need for such a player is no longer as great. The rationale for any team wanting Sura's deal was for that team to avoid the luxury tax. Well, now that team is the Rockets. Waiving Sura and his $3.8M salary for the "bargain-basement price" of $1M will save the Rockets up to $6.6M ($2.8M in salary + up to $3.8M in luxury tax, assuming that the Rockets are that far over the threshhold). Les Alexander has paid up time after time so far this summer. In the Mike James trade, Les took on the longer contract in James, had to pay his trade kicker and took on Reed's contract (more on that below). Les spend some money for the Brad Newley pick and probably spend much more than that on the Carl Landry pick. My guess is that Les paid the full $3M cash permitted under league rules in the Luis Scola trade (plus $500k towards Scola's Spanish league buyout), and he took on Jackie Butler's salary. I think we Rockets fans should give him some credit and allow him to "dump an asset" in order for him to save some money. P.S. Unless he is traded, it is highly unlikely that Justin Reed is not on the roster next season. Reed (unlike Snyder, Butler, Novak, JLIII and Sura) has a player option for 2008-09 that makes waiving him more difficult than waiving those other players. Any buyout of Reed would likely have to account for his salary for the next TWO seasons. Why would the Rockets pay ~$3M to get rid of Reed when they can pay $500k to get rid of JLIII or $700k to get rid of Novak, let alone cutting Mike Harris for the paltry price of $50k.
