I do notice the change, but I also notice what hasn't. It's probably much better now than it was for someone growing up in the 70s, but there's enough to get me ranty. Yeah, but that relationship was like what Chow and Mira Sorvino had in the Replacement Killers or all of his, Jet Li's, or Jackie Chan's relationship with Caucasian female leads. Enough to make you assume, but nothing explicit as if the Hays Code still exists... I remember Vanishing Son on the WB! There was a Russel Wong spotting in that last Mummy...
Although most of Jet Li and Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies never featured any explicit romance either. In Jet Li's Once Upon a Time in China there were lots of jokes about how unromantic Jet Li's character is.
cause asians are funny, but not well organized. they should bring up the internment camps more often.
Howabout Exclusion Laws, railroad workers, "Chinaman's Justice", the running out of Chinese in Western towns, Vincent Chin, the burning of Vietnamese fishing boats in Kima and so on.. Racism towards Asians in US history hasn't been limited to Internment Camps. You might be right in general and we should bring up Asian American history more. I often get the feeling that its not just but non-Asians but Asian Americans that don't know much of Asian American history.
to sell it to the public and get good guilt factor you really have to bring out a single event instead of a slew of events showing a trend. I mean in the public mind what big events are in the almost 100 years of oppression between Emancipation Proclamation and 50's-60's civil rights protests? Almost nothing cause you need big events to drive it home. Seriously I mean Shaq has made tons of blatantly racist comments against Yao and you hardly ever heard anything except "we think thats racist" then the news anchor laughs off camera.
I gotta admit that it took a college course in ethnic studies just to learn an overview about Asian American history. There are plenty of fine books, but it's not like it's required... A lot are in their own bubble when it comes to this stuff. There isn't a single unifying factor driving the Asian American cause. Some would even say the lines are perfectly fine the way it is.
I strongly disagree -- had the LOTR had an all black cast it would have been even more successful. Bilbo, wat up my brotha !
It would be great if instead of black riders they had KKK guys. In the spirit of this tangent. Call me jaded but his performance in Warlords was meh. I thought Fearless was his best movie in the last decade. Gotta check out that directors cut.
