We've watched for years as Stockton and Malone have run the pick and roll, Yao is a great passer and 15 ft and in shooter. Let's copy the strategy. Also, Stockton screen for Malone, which made it significantly easier for Malone to establish low post position. Yao is constatnly fighting for low post position and is not (yet) strong enough to hold his position down low. Let the guards and small forwards screen for Yao on the opposite low block and have Yao role strong side for easy jump hooks, which he hits with ease. Steve, please take home a Jason Kidd video and study. Also, Rice can hit a 3 but gives us zero on D and the boards. Posey is the ultimate starter, so lets start him now and get consistency with our potential best defensive lineup.
532, You just gave Rudy a Blueprint. He won't follow logical coaching. He says he spends hours looking at tape, nonsense. Confused is the coaching style that I've seen from Rudy. Even during the championship years. The Rox won because he was smart enough to stay out of the way. He tried to coach the second championship team and they finished 6th in the West. He got out of the way and they swept Orlando. Name one time where we have said that Rudy outcoached someone for a win?
His offensive strategy is to replay the same play. But seriously, he tried to milk a play or a set of particular plays until it flat out doesn't work anymore. He ride Hakem's play to two championships. So, sometime it work if you have a superstar to deliver it. Other times it become too predictable and the defense figure out how to stop it. But from what we read in the paper Mobley said that the players didn't do what the coach plan. So, not sure how much is due to Rudy and how much is due to players who can't or won't carried out the play. Overall, I think Rudy have a tendency to stick to the play that he is comfortable with. When the plays had work sometimes in the past he tend to stick with it. For example, I saw that same Francis play (last night) in 3 or 4 other games when the Rocket had the last chance to tie or winning a game.
You are simply a rediculous hater. You have no idea what Rudy does. What do you think he is doing in all of those countless, countless hours he is not sleeping? I guarantee you that he does watch a ton of tape, and my comment is not simply based on biased speculation.
Well, in the Dream era we'd feed it into Hakeem. If he was one on one then he'd shoot. If he was double teamed he'd kick it out for a three. After that there was the brilliant Isolation offense. And that's about it.
19P, Like the 19 in your moniker. I'm not a Rudy Opposer. If he spends hours on tape watching and doesn't incorporate what he learned, he has been wasting his time. There was a time where the Rox only used the left side of the floor. Most of the players were right handed. If you can logically explain why a strategical genius would do this year after year, I will finally understand.
The thing with Rudy is that he's extremely conservative by nature. Reading nineteen's varied criticisms of his coaching, most of which is tied into this trait of Rudy's. Not that it isn't a good trait by any means. After all, 'stick to your knitting' is the new catchphrase in management consultancy. However, this means that he does not make changes until he is absolutely forced to do so. Thus lies Boki's dilemma. Yao forced himself into the lineup with a monstrous performance. So he does not innovate. Another problem is that he is too much of a player's coach, if there is such a thing. Every player he takes in loves him. He's fatherly and caring. Consequently, a lot of times, the players dictate the type of game that is played. He tried to institute a flowing passing game. Anyone seen any sign of that recently? Anyone? Fact of the matter is that the key players probably felt more comfortabel reverting to an isolation type of game and he did not press the issue. I mean, if he is doing what he said and what we are seeing is in fact his idea of a flowing passing game, then we've got bigger problems. I don't know. This stuff is frustrating to watch.
wow i didnt even know rudy had one. he cant coach anymore as well. he makes a descent coach not a great one. ive wated the rx since 91. and i know most all there histroy. ive been to about 50 games in my time and have been dedicated and i love rudy t but i think we are lovestuck on him cuz i feel we need a new coach
I have a question, maybe a dumb one. Boykins is 5'5". Francis is 6'3". Why didn't the Rockets ever exploit this? Why didn't Francis ever post up the much shorter player? Wouldn't this almost certainly demand a double team from the Warriors that Francis could then pass out of?
Just to add to the last post: Maybe it's just me, but I would imagine if GS put Boykins on Kidd, GP, Dre Miller, or maybe even Nash, then he would be posted up. I know it's not anywhere near to being the answer to the Rocket's problems right now, but it's just bugging me that I don't know why this wasn't done, not even once.
Maybe because Steve Francis barely "posts up". What is the Mavericks offensive strategy? It's basically let Steve Nash do his stuff and find open shooters. Or get Dirk Nowitzki one-on-one. Or isolate Michael Finley. They don't have a huge strategy. What's their defense? They use zone defense. Simple. They just have more experienced players.
Rudy is too much of a CHEMISTRY guy, he needs to learn how to be an ASS kicking guy for the young guys on his team. Too often he just lets players who make major mistakes stay in the game. YANK em out Rudy, show some sack. DD
77, Thanks for your comments. I try to provide various examples of Rudy's lack of coaching. Others ignore the examples and paint me as an Opposer (New Word for 03). What is a $4M/yr Coah's responsibility? Direction, Strategy, Substitution, Discipline, Scouting, Adjustments and Leadership are the qualities that Great Coaches have. Rudy is lacking in all areas. The world is moving even if we stand still. So that will even put you farther behind. No Playoffs for the 4th year in a row? Show Rudy the Door!
Which of course misses the point. Until Rudy came along, passing a ball into Hakeem might as well have been passing a ball into a black hole. When Hakeem starting actually passing the ball to other players, my jaw just about dropped. Rudy is not the kind of person who is a genius Xs and Os guy and constantly dazzles people with exceptional plays, but he is capable of one thing, and that is getting exceptionally skilled athletes to change their games for the good of the team. Maybe he isn't Bobby Knight, but Bobby wouldn't last a month in pro ball anyway. The players would get him fired cause their contracts are bigger and longer than his would be. Dave
I'm quite sure a whole lot of fans want to know what he's doing, because it's not reflecting on the court.
I've seen Francis post up before, just not lately. It was probably in our 45-win season two years ago. Don't tell me you think he's incapable of doing it. But really, if you somehow forgot, BOYKINS IS FRIGGIN 5'-5" for cryin out loud! Give me the damn ball, and I'll post him up! Not really though , but don't you get the point? If the man guarding you is nearly ONE FOOT shorter than you, then, at least one time, just once (pretty please?), POST HIS A$$ UP, DAMMIT!!
Maybe.....just maybe it did not occur to Stevie that Mr Boykins is "5'5. Or maybe Stevie thought it was too easy to score that way. Maybe Boykins looks bigger than 5-5 in person. Rudy T show is only 3 days away I will try to brings this up with him (through Rich and Charlie).
There should never be a way to score that is too easy when you're trying to win games. That's like Shaq saying he'll only shoot 10 foot jumpers because it's too easy to back his man down and dunk.
