Found this strange article on the net. It seems that a new game of Volleyball has been given the ok. WHat makes it different you ask? Well participants must be shorter than 6'0" for men and 5'6" for women. Short People Get Volleyball Game Fri Apr 5,10:21 AM ET LAUSANNE, Switzerland - A new form of volleyball aimed at allowing shorter players to succeed was approved Friday by the sport's governing body. The new game, with the provisional name of Challenge Volleyball, will be open to men below 6 feet and women below 5-6. "According to demographic studies, some 97 percent of men and 95 percent of women in the world's population are under these height limits," said Anne Peytavin, president of the medical commission of the International Volleyball Federation. Volleyball with a height limit already has been introduced in Brazil. On the final day of its meeting, the federation's board also unanimously supported Ruben Acosta for another term as president. The Mexican lawyer, who turned 68 Thursday, has held the post for 18 years. Short People Volleyball
Guys, for your information, I am a dwarf so please watch what words you say. Calling a dwarf a "midget" is honestly like calling a black person the 'n' word. It is that offensive. There is a difference between dwarfs and midgets. If you want me to tell you I will.
As I understand it, a midget is small with proportionately sized limbs and features, while a dwarf is small and has disproportionately sized limbs and/or features. I suspect Stevierebel will correct me if I am wrong.
Bobrek, you are real close. Midgets have a small torso and limbs. Dwarfs have a "normal" size torso with short limbs.
Stevierebel I was surpirsed to see you write how offensive it was to a dwarf to be called a midget. I had never heard of the bad inference. I went to grade school with a dwarf (this was around 35 years ago) who was commonly referred to as a midget. He was the only dwarf (or midget) that I have ever known, so I am certainly ignorant as to the offensiveness of the term midget to a dwarf. Is it as offensive for a midget to be called a dwarf? Pardon my ignorance, but I find this issue interesting because I have never seen or read anything about it. Thanks
No offense is taken. Nowadays, the word kinda makes dwarfs feel "smaller" than they really are. It is a stigma that is impolitically correct to say.
MTV had a special a while back about little people. It was very informative. I remember a segment on body lengthening. That was scary. Otherwise, it was basically about little people trying to get into showbiz and how most of the roles are of course, stereotypical. They even talked to a couple of little people that went on tour with Ozzy on his last tour. They even made small cameos (no pun intended) on The Osbournes.
Wasn't this controversy concerning the terminology brought to light when a fellow Houston city councilman called Joe Roach a midget? BTW, I met Joe Roach's wife a number of times (years ago). She is a really sweet lady. I was working in a grocery store where she always shopped and she would come find me when she needed something from the top shelf.
hey rockHEAD, I need a thank you for that one. remember the Dale Robertson mullet thread. that picture was "DoD mulleciously abusing ZRB"
hey Stevierebel, would you mind telling me how tall you are and how much you weigh? Just curious.............
I am 4'6" and weigh around 140 because I have a wide build (got that from my father). No, no one else in my family is a dwarf either (just added that if some of y'all were thinking this). Back to Roach, he is a really nice man. That lady who called him a "midget" was moved from one part of the council to another that no one sees anymore.
Thanks for the info Stevierebel. I'm sure 99% of us didn't know that. Back on topic, that volleyball league sounds cool. Not to be prejudiced against tall people, but the upper levels of volleyball (and basketball) are completely dominated by very tall people. It kind of makes a joke of the sport when no matter the athletic ability of the person, now matter how good their basic vball skills are, they can never aspire to play at the highest levels. That's one of the reasons that I love golf of course - there are 5'2 professionals (Ian Woosnam) and 6'8 professionals (Gordon Sherry if I remember correctly). The size of your body does not disqualify you from contention.
Stevierebel, for reference, what are sensitive terms to use when referring to dwarves like yourself? Is it even dwarves or just 'dwarfs'? This is something I've never thought about and would like to know.
