the pontiac all ncaa tournament team commercials are on everywhere. patrick ewing, but the one that stands out is Bobby Hurley. he looked like stellar player. can anyone tell me what ever happend to him? did he have an NBA career?
He was in a serious car accident after he left Duke and it pretty much destroyed his NBA career. He played a little bit, but was a fraction of what he was. After that, I believe he got into horse racing (owning, not riding). Not too sure now, but I vaguely recall something about him wanting to coach.
To be brutally honest, the car accident ultimately had little to do with him not being able to stick in the NBA. He didn't have a good shot and he was puny to boot. If you've ever driven in Sacto, you wouldn't be surprised that some hick careened into Hurley. They're maniacs behind the wheel.
I think he has a job with Duke? Not sure, but I swear i heard about this somewhere. Its funny, I said that Jay Williams was going to be the next Hurley, but didnt mean for him to be in an accident also. His play was great in college, but knew he wasnt going anywhere in the NBA.
I think he's an assisstant coach on some college team... have Alzheimer's, so don't trust my info as facts.
Hurley wouldn't have been an all-star or anything, but there is no way you can say that his injuries had little to do with his career being so short. I've read a ton of articles on the guy and almost every single person mentions the fact that that car accident robbed him of his career.
If I recall correctly, Hurley was the seventh overall pick in the draft-- somebody thought he was going to be pretty good. I can't remember exactly when he got hurt, but I want to say it was only in his second year.

Yeah, but we don't get paid millions to make those judgements so if that is in defense of Rudy its weak. Besides, the only point I'm making is just because someone thought Hurley was good enough to be a lotto pick, doesn't mean he was. Bottom line is we'll never know.
No, it's not a defense of Rudy/CD. In fact, the Griffin debacle is probably the biggest personnel mistake in recent Rockets history. The mistake has cost more than most people realize. We all know that it cost us the 3 draft picks. It also cost us a very good role player in Kenny Thomas. We wouldn't have traded away KT if we weren't banking on EG's potential. It also cost us the opportunity of getting a shooter like Rashard Lewis. Think about this, the summer before last season, if we didn't decide to bank on Griffin being our future at the 4, our starting lineup now would be: Francis, Mobley, Lewis, Thomas, Yao, with JJ, Taylor, and Cato coming off the bench. That roster could make us one of the elite teams in the West. That said, my point was that most of us here agreed with Rudy/CD in perceiving Eddie Griffin as our future. I think it's a bit hypocritical to criticize the management on hindsight when we ourselves saw the same thing they did.

Hurley was a competitor rather than an "athlete." He was intelligent, knew how and when to pass to teammates and understood the game. He didn't have a great shot, but neither did John Stockton, another competitor rather than an "athlete." That accident robbed NBA fans almost as much as Hurley.
You are right. I got the stats from NBA.com and they left off his rookie year. ESPN has the correct stats. He only played 19 games before the injury so it is hard to tell how he would have developed. He averaged 6 ast and 7 pts with a .37 FG% in 26 minutes per game that year. Not much better than after the injury.
We'd have Yao and JJ? We got Griffin a year before Yao right? Who knows where we'd be at all if we hadn't selected him. It's pretty impossible to even speculate what our squad would be ... trades, draft picks, free agents, etc.
I wasn't talking about the Griffin draft. I was talking about the summer before last season, the year we drafted Yao, when Griffin had played one year for us. That summer, Seattle offered to trade Rashard Lewis for Eddie Griffin (with fillers to match contracts). We refused to part with Griffin because we thought he was our future star PF. Subsequently, we had a PF logjam of Griffin, Taylor and Thomas. We traded away Thomas for Posey. If we had done the Lewis for Griffin trade, we wouldn't have traded away Thomas. And our starting lineup would be what I presented in my post. And then we could sign JJ lasts summer to backup Mobley and Lewis.
