Yesterday, while watching the Elite Eight games on TV, my DSL service suddenly stopped working.

Because I was in the middle of a web site update, I instantly became furious. Suddenly, I had the notion to scan my apartment complex, with my wireless PC card, to see if there were other apartments with wireless networks into which I could tap.

Imagine my surprise when I stumbled across not one, not two, but three different wireless networks without any encryption protection!

I tried all three, and I was able to connect without problems.

Even worse, two of them utilized the default Windows workgroup name, so I could get into their shared directories and access files.

I thought about leaving a *.txt file in one of their folders, warning them against the possible harm of keeping an unprotected wireless network open in an apartment complex.

But I decided against it, seeing as how my DSL connection may go down again in the future. Was I really all that wrong? It's not like I'm rushing to disconnect my DSL service and using other people's service for free.

Yesterday while I was watching the elite eight games on TV, suddenly my internet connection seemed to slow down. I asked some of the other people in my apartment complex about it and they said that it happened to them too. One of my neighbors works for the FBI and said he would look into it.

Couldn't tell ya. I looked at folder names, but didn't enter any of them, due to guilt.

But if I down a few tonight, and start to feel silly, I just may take another shot at it.
