Why do people say this when quoting something? And putting up the quote sign too. I thought quote = " " ? So if you say "quote, unquote", wouldn't that delete the quote so what you said was not quoted? Just bored.

It's typically used in conversation. As in speaking to an actual person, face to face. I know that's hard to believe, but people really used to do that sort of thing. They got together in twos and threes and fours... in small groups and large ones, and they talked to each other. No typing was required. That form of communication may be on its way out, but my hope is that the need for physical proximity in order to have sex will at least cause some form of verbiage to continue. If nothing else, one should still hear the occasional, "Want to get on top?"

    Impeach Bush/Cheney.

I was curious about the logic of saying "quote, unquote." I meant to say that the quotation marks are deleted after you say "unquote" so what you just said is not quoted.

I didn't know people used to talk face to face. How strange is that? It must be yestermillennium thing.
