we had made the Brandon Roy trade last year and finished with the same record-ish, etc. Ceteris paribas, that give us a lineup of Francis james or alston Roy McGrady Scola Yao + Bench (Hayes, Head, etc etc etc) I like that team. Sorry Shane.
what if we made that trade with sampson in 86 and ended up with akeem, drexler, and jordan? I also dont recall any brandon roy trade. I recall that if Roy was available we were going to select him, and of he wasn't we were going to draft gay and trade him for battier because the only player we wanted was roy.. Portland screwed us over on roy so the latter occured
This doesn't even count as hindsight. Because the deal was in place if...Roy was available; but he wasn't. Therefore trading out of the 1st round. Shane contributed quite a lot to the 52 game win season. Note that Shane played a lot. He didn't make bone headed plays. I can see hindsight with Portland about trading Sampson for the #2 pick and Drexler. Looking back, that would have been a coup. Hakeem, Jordan, Drexler. But, remember that Sampson was the National college player of the year 3 years or so in a row.
What if Van Gundy wasn't a dumb ass and we did not win that pointless game against Minnesota that cost us the pick?
Well the Rockets drafetd 8th and Roy went 6th, which means if that's true they had a deal for 7th - that's pretty close, given that Minnesota apparently didn't even want him, then inexplicably traded him for the 7th player chosen, for no apparent reason.
The deal was supposed to be between Minnesota and Houston. The T-Wolves (who liked Randy Foye) took Brandon Roy at #6, with the understanding that Houston would take Foye at #8. Unfortunately, Portland's GM, former Rockets GM Steve Patterson, caught wind of this deal and decided to get in on the deal. He took Foye at #7, traded for Roy, and the rest is history.
Again, nobody with the Rockets dropped the ball here. NOT HINDSIGHT worthy. Steve Patterson is just a shrewd guy. He held Minnesota at ransom with Foyle. Roy is a heck of a player though. But this was merely a chess match won by Portland.
i believe the game you are referring to was actually against denver, and george karl was the dumb ass for keeping melo out most of the 4th quarter and refused to put him in eventhough melo was begging to go back in to win the game. karl's nuggets ultimately dropped a spot in the playoffs and ended up losing in the 1st round.
Yeah, I'm sure Shane is having a hard time sleeping at night now because you "like that team". Pointless thread.
I think there was a Wolves game the last day of the season where Mark Madsen was allowed to jack up 15 shots or so, 7 of them being treys, of which I can't see him making any? I'm pretty sure that's a tank job right there, even though it didn't really pay off for them.
Not sure I'd call Steve Patterson shrewd-he is not in the league anymore-Portland has someone else picking their talent
To talk "WHAT IF" thats completly nonsense! What if we drafted MJ instead of Hakeem?! Or what if we had Gay on our team?! If we haven't had Shane we logicaly wouln't have 52 wins ofcourse. And trade was 8th pick ! To me thats great trade cause WHAT IF Gay turned out to be another Eddie Griffin (R.I.P.) or something??? No gamble thats it.
Don't forget that the word out of Washington was that Roy's knees are already shot, and he had to miss 25 games of last year with knee problems. That, and Shane has never missed more than 4 games in his career. Carry on.
Anyway, I don't see how it makes Portland really shrewd, more like Minnesota is - shockingly - idiotic, by being held over a barrel by Portland, who drafted the player they wanted after minnesota picked. Anyway, I think a Roy-McGrady combo is much better than McGrady-Battier. I don't Tracy can play guard much anymore. He's too broken down.
Minny didn't really get screwed nor were they idiotic. Not in that deal, at least. They could have drafted Foye themselves. But they drafted Roy... the consequence being that either they get the trade done with Houston or they get a trade done with Portland. I believe they got some cash+Foye for Roy. So, they still came out OK, with the guy they wanted plus cash instead of just the guy they wanted. I think what the Rockets were offering at that time was Foye (if he was around) + Head for Roy. I don't know if Head would have added much to Minny. Maybe it would have saved them from signing Mike James and had to take Juwan's contract to dump him.
