Could be she being a realist is more concerned about the current (money, car, house, marriage), and you being an optimist is looking more down the road (putting purchases and commitments off until establishing financial stability).

Or it could be just a clash of views on life/living?

What it means is that you have a more positive outlook on things possibly to the extent that you neglect some responsibilities, while she has a more negative outlook on things which sees as necessary to have for survival, and making sure important things get done. But probably more specifically a negative outlook on love/romance which she uses to protect herself from getting hurt.
