I currently own the best boxer in the world. He's 13 years old now though and is getting near the age where it might be time to get a new pup. He actually had testicular cancer and was starting to develop tumors all over his body but since he got neutered its like he's a young pup again.

That said I'm looking at getting a new pup as an inside dog, but will still have good enough temperament to not run my boxer wild and be a good companion instead of a nuisance. I'd hate to make my boxer miserable with a puppy that'll be all over his back. I read that girls are better companions in that department. Is this true?

I'm really digging the Westies. They're Scottish. They don't shed. They're adorably cute. I'm just curious if they have more of a nippy attitude compared to say a Bichon or Poodle. Any Westie owners here that can testify to how badass these dogs are?

It's really hard to say no to a face like this.

Your boxer will hate a new dog. Let him live out the rest of his life in peace. And do you keep himoutside?

Ya he's an outside dog. His mom died a couple of years ago so he spent all of his life with her until she died. He still gets lonely every now and again at night because of it. That said he gets along great with everybody. I just figure a smaller inside dog that wouldn't jump all over him would be good is all and might be easier for him to make friends with.

Why not let him inside then. He would rather be with you. I assume you are in texas, outside only takes a toll on dogs.

I have one and love him to death. These are the things you need to know about them.

They were bred to hunt small animals like rabbits and rodents. So if they see one, no matter how well trained they are they will go nuts and will not listen to you. I've had my westie for about 7 years and in that time, he has killed a rabbit, two squirrels, and a possum. Its weird finding squirrel pieces laying around your yard. They also do like cats but mine hasn't killed one yet. I think would if he had the opportunity.

They will also nip things that move quickly likely rodents such as kids who make really sudden movements. They are not great with kids. They are not bad, but not great like labs and golden retrievers. They do shed, but not as much as other dogs. They are really also very loyal.

Most of the time, he is just chill and wants to be in the same room with you. Overall, a great dog. My wife's yorkie on the otherhand, not so much. Same disposition but yappier, and not nearly as cool.

He sheds too much and actually prefers it outside.

Thanks for the reply. One of my nieces has a miniature schnauzer and her dog has a habit of killing squirrels and other rodents. I'm probably going to wait until my boxer goes, but I'm set on a Westie. If I do get one, I'll probably wait until December as a Christmas gift to my girlfriend.

I had 2 westies growing up and I've loved them. They're were pretty feisty when they were young, biting people who made sudden movements, doorbells, etc...They also chewed on pretty much anything they could find.

But as they got older, they became much more well behaved and were definitely GREAT companion dogs if that's what you're looking for. Also, my westies didn't shed at all IIRC.

Another word of warning. Westies command a fairly high price so there are plenty of puppy mills breeders. I would recommend a westie rescue place first. You won't get the puppy experience but most rescues will let you try out dogs for compatibility before you commit.
