Surf Guy: Nope, I'm not kidding and it was put together for me by a trainer at the Racketball and Fitness I used to work out at. I've been doing it for about the past 3 months and I've had nothing but good results. Like I said, it's a hard workout, but once you get used to it, it's no problem.

    For chest I do:

Incline, Decline, regular, ropes and butterfly. Using 40 lb. dumbbells to do the incline, decline and regular.

I dont know the proper names of a particular excersise, so I dont know how to explain it.

Im not trying to lose wieght. I rather even put on 5-10 pounds. I have some flab by the abs, but nothing to worry about [IMG] I play enough tennis and sometimes basketball to keep me in proper aerobic shape. I simply am looking to get big and get a few "cuts"

Thanks for your help though guys. I will try to increase the wieghts I use and maybe lower my reps. If you all have even more suggestions, keep em coming.

Dreamer, I am dead tired by the time I finish working out. So I know its not due to lack of trying hard. Also I do three different things for biceps, 3 for triceps. Also for shoulder I do 6 different things. Chest five different. Back 3 different. And all of these I do 3 sets of 10 reps. Is it normal to sometimes not being able to lift as much as u usually can? Sometimes on my third set I can do almost 12-13 reps, and sometimes I can barely do 5-6 reps. Someone told me to try those high protein smoothies from Smoothie King before working out. I dont think that helps much though. Also Im wondering if that "Torso Tiger" is a good thing to get?

How much do you guys bench press? I want to see if Im the strongest guy on this site.

I'm a tall and skinny guy with long, lanky limbs like Marcus Camby, so I have to work extra hard to add bulk.

Anyway, I was lifting for about half a year, but I just recently hurt my wrist (bad form doing bicep curls one day), so I had to stop for the last two weeks.

I started off benching only about 40 lbs, but eventually worked my way up to almost 100 lbs before the wrist injury. I do 3-5 sets of 8 reps with this weight.

I have never tried to find out the max I can lift (one rep), because it's too easy to injure yourself that way, especially without a spotter.

I'm currently doing 5 sets of 8 at 195 pounds, so that should put at.... I'm guessing between 260-275? I've never done an actual max, so I'm not certain. I've done a military press at 250 three times, but it was on a machine. [IMG]

I weigh 155-160 and start with 135 and work up to 205 on barbell bench. If I go with dumbbells I usually go with 80-85 pounders.

Also, do not use creatine unless you drink ALOT of water. Your muscles can easily cramp up and cause you injury. If you are in the first year of working out you really don't need creatine. Eating and sleeping sufficiently will be enough along with your intense workouts. Mix in some protein powder if you want more strength and mass instead of creatine.

I was doing 235 lbs on the BowFlex and it is supposed to be harder than just using regular free weights so I imagine I could do about 250 lbs with a barbell. Although, I couldn't do this now. I could probably do around 200 now.

Although I use to think maxxing out was kind of cool...in retrospect, it's kind of silly.
What does it prove to max out? It may prove that you can invoke a hernia if nothing else.
If you were training for a toughman competition or something maybe. I once knew a guy who bench pressed 300 lbs and he got his arse kicked bad by someone who never lifted weights and was much weaker...so it proves nothing.

Who's stronger? Who cares! The only reason to max out now is to see how much you can lift for your own knowledge...not to earn bragging rights. If your doing it just for bragging rights, then I'm hear to tell ya your a bumbling idiot.

I have to agree with Surfguy. There is really no point in maxing out except for what is nothing more than a ***** contest. Not that that is necessarily a bad thing sometimes, but the risk of injury in my opinion simply isn't worth it.

As far as creatine, the only stuff I have used is the serum, which doesn't have the cramping problems that the powder does.

I tried Creatine for a few weeks. But, the lack of studies on it are a major concern for me. I never had any cramping problems with the powder. What I do hear is that Creatine is very hard on the liver and kidneys and makes them work overtime potentially leading to kidney failure. Sure, Creatine is naturally occurring within our bodies but the amount of creatine ingested to aid in muscle building is many times the normal amount our bodies produce. There are studies talking about liver/kidney failure associated with Creatine. I got involved the same way most do with the "everybody is doing it" mentality. However, the lack of long-term studies and potential kidney/liver problems are enough to scare me away. I would rather be all natural and not take supplements. I had a hard time just keeping up with the recommended dosages of that stuff. That and the cost were also deterents.
The taste was kind of addicting, however, from what I recall. I liked the Grape flavor. In the end, it's just not worth it.

    fadeaway,

    Surfguy,

    Lord Tree,

I've never once injure myself while "maxing out". I have, however, been injured while just working out.

Funny story: I was in my friends garage and no one was home. This was a long time ago (years), and I was trying to see how much I could bench. I put on 250 and did that. Then I put on 265. Well, lemme tell you from experience that "maxing out" alone is NOT a good idea. I wanted to lean one way or the other to let the plates slide off the bar, but there's was a ton of breakable stuff in the way. So, I had to, get this, roll 265 lbs down my stomach, hips, and crotch to where I could sit up. Man, that was painful. I didn't get "injured", but those bruises on my stomach and hip bones sure did hurt.

There are many reasons to "max out"

    1. Confidence: Being and getting stronger can give you confidence.

    2. Knowledge: Umm, if you're lifting then you are trying to get stronger aren't you? Well, the best way to know if you've gotten stronger is to know what is the maximum amount of weight you can perform at any given lift.

    3. Gauge Work Out: There are many work outs that go by a percentage of your "max". ie, 60% of max 10 reps, 70% of max 8 reps, etc.

    4. To Set and Reach Goals: For many people "goals" are the only way they can motivate themselves to continue doing something (like weight training) that is not easy to do.

I agree, DREAMer. People have died bench pressing heavy weights without a spotter. Just another reason why you should try a BowFlex. You can bench as much as you want and don't need a spotter. Up to 410 lbs, anyway. That is scary the scenario you just mentioned. Your lucky to be alive in my opinion.

Did I mention that I really like the BowFlex when it doesn't fly apart [IMG]? It has so many different exercise variations. Did I mention I'm the guy in the commercial [IMG]? Just kidding. It's a good machine, though. I first got it and went on a 3 month tear and was a tough guy. But, then it flew apart and I chilled. I'm fixing to get back to the heavy working out again since I fixed it.

One thing to remember is to do it every OTHER day.
When you lift weights you are actually tearing the muscle. Then your body rebuilds it stronger than before. REMEMBER: every OTHER day

Bball, actually you need to rest a muscle for 3 days, HOWEVER, you can workout multiple days in a row as long as you are working out different muscle groups.

    Lord Tree,

Where the heck did you hear three days!?

48 hours is and always will be sufficient time for your muscles to heal.

Little know fact: Abdominal muscles heal faster than other muscles, so sit-ups can be performed every day (Well, some rest is reccomended).
