I just heard a repeat of an interview a local station did with Chris Mihm. Let me preface this by saying that it was an FM, non-sports-related station and that Mihm called for the hell of it. I'll paraphrase what he said. "I've got some news for Dallas fans. I think you're going to get Webber; I really do." He went on to say that Cuban was the reason every player in the NBA was drooling over playing in Dallas. He said Cuban went so far as to buy lobster visiting teams (is that right?!).

I know it's just Mihm and at times NBA players can be just as clueless as anyone else, but at the same time, they hear inside mumblings we average folk don't. I also don't know anything about the salary cap implications this may have. Would they have to get rid of a Juwan before they could get a Webber?

Anyway, just throwing this out there. Flame on; I'm packing asbestos underwear. [IMG]

I wonder where B.J. Tyler thinks Webber's going...

I have heard that Cuban has ofered Howard and Gary Trent for C-webb. I know in a straight up deal that it isn't much but in a sign and trade you can't expect to get much in return.
Cuban isn't afraid to try to buy a championship, so I would think he will make every effort, short of giving up one of his franhise players (Dirk or Finley).
I still think he'll go East (Orlando or Washington if MJ does come back or possibly even Philly if they can't ge Deke to re-up).

Could possibly happen. With all the money Cuban pays in fines, I don't think being over the salary cap would bother him much.

It's true about the lobster, etc. for visiting teams. (The whole point is to get players thinking about being on a team that treated them so well every day.)

And Webber is known to care about such amenities. I think he raised a stink about wanting better food on the team plane when he was in Washington.

Hard to see Webber playing for Nelson again, though.

Finley or Dirk would have to be a part. Otherwise if I am Sac I'd wouldn't deal with Dallas at all. Howard would be hardley worth it for free, though not a terrible player, he is not worth his cap killing contract.

I think Juwan only has 1 or 2 more years left on his contract. I'm not sure how much it'll be those last couple of years, though.

    DoD > Juwan is $19.7m in '01 & $20.6m in '02.

IMHO, there is one and only one impediment if Cuban really wants CWebb - The Luxury Tax. According to RealGM, the Mavs are near or slightly over the projected cap right now with these 7 players under contract - Buckner, Harvey, Eisley, Howard , Nash & Nowitski. Finley has a POpt and will take it as Cuban has already stated he will pay him the max.

The Mavs can make a play for Webber, and later sign Booth or Bradley (or Dream) at a rate less than Bradley's $9M for last season. Then, don't take the TOpt on Najera & Wang placing themselves just over the LTax threshhold. (I project them to be over the $54m LTax by the amount needed to sign a Center).

2 questions my fellow Rockets fans -

    1) Do you think signing Webber to the max and then paying a $5m-$8m LTax penalty will stop Cuban from trying to sign Webber?

    2) If #1 comes to pass, will you still think Cuban is just a regular guy like one of us - only he has money?

Hehe. Count to 10. That's probably how long it takes for Cuban to accrue that much in interest alone. [IMG] For people like Paul Allen and Mark Cuban, $5-$8 million is peanuts if it means a huge step towards a championship.
