A friend and bandmate of mine missed rehersal today because his niece was in a serious car accident. She and her friend were not wearing seat belts. She was thrown from the car, but is in stable condition. Her friend was also thrown from the car, broke her neck and probably will not survive. Even if she does, she will be paralyzed.

My friend said that the doctors told him that they both probably would have walked away unharmed if they had been wearing seat belts.

I feel terrible for my friend and his family. All this the result of something as simple as a seat belt. :(

:( Sorry to hear that Jeff.

Is it a legal requirement to wear a seat belt in Texas? It certainly is in the UK. I wouldn't even consider driving in a car without my seat belt on.

    According to statistical studies...

Most people who die in crashes are killed because of the force of the impact or because they are thrown from the vehicle. Every study shows you are much more likely to survive an accident if you are buckled in. People thrown from vehicles are four times more likely to be killed than those who remain inside.

Those people that try to make that argument about "seatbelts actually are harmful in accidents" piss me off and have probably never been in an accident before. Way to be lazy and ignorant guys.

Wearing your seat belt comes along with age. If you want to be like a grown up wear your damn seat belt.

Ive seen a ton of cases where people have actually intentionally disabled their SRS sytems because they believe they did more harm than good.

Not wearing your seat belt is suicide.

Sucks to hear that Jeff, Hopefully everything will be ok.

Of all the great advice that floats aroung in the hangout, wearing a seatbelt is one of the most important. Its a big deal with me, I basically wont get a car without puting my seatblet on. I had a college buddy die because he got ejected from his car on the highway. He might not have made it anyway but it hurts to think he would have had a much better chance if he was wearing it.

Not trying to seem preachy but everyone please wear you damn seatbelts.

People who don't wear seatbelts can't do math and can't read. The physics involved are pretty simple and the results of unchecked momentum are pretty ugly - and most air bags do not work as designed unless you are wearing a seatbelt. Only in a tiny minority of accidents would people be better off without wearing their seatbelts. The only reason some people survive at all is because there are so many auto accidents - most of those people are dead.

When I was a kid, I was a passenger in a head-on (no seat belt). I ate the windshield, but fortunately only ended up with a bump on the head.

Been wearing a seatbelt ever since.

I know my seat belt has saved my life before. A couple of years ago I left a friend's house, and decided that even though a couple of friends had left right before me, that I was going to be the first one to make it out of the neighborhood. His neighborhood has about a mile long stretch of road that you have to go down to get out of it, and though it had stopped raining by the time we left, it had rained all day.

I was going 55-60, passed the first one of my friends and could see the next one of my friends up in front of me when I lost control of the car as it hydroplaned. I never saw the puddle that I hit, but it grabbed my tires and pulled them to the right as I skidded along through the puddle. When the tires caught again they shot me off the road into a tree, which sent me into a 540 degree spin. Easily one of the scariest moments in my life. Dazed but fine, I climbed out of the car and flagged down the friend I had just passed.

After surveying the wreckage, I was extremely lucky. Upon impacting the tree, the force of the seat belt slamming me back into my seat was so severe that it actually snapped one of the bolts that holds the back of the chair down to the seat. I'm lucky that I was actually wearing my seat belt and that I didn't break both of the bolts in the seat, as I could have easily gone splat over the front or the back windshield. Also, there's no telling what would have happened if I had taken the tree a few feet farther back on the driver side door.

in defense of peleincubus, I'm sure there are cases in which a seat belt could cause you harm.. it's quite possible but statistically they save a lot more lives than they kill I'd imagine.

the statistics just don't matter much if you are one of the rare people that are actually caused harm to...

I wonder what the number is.. less than 1% probably that would be better off without seatbelts?

Just make it a habit to wear the belt. After a couple of months, you'll feel naked if you're not wearing it.

Putting mine on is the first thing I do when I get in a car.

On another note my uncle would have died in an accident in Austin about 15 years ago if he had been wearing his setbelt. Long story short... he hit a patch of ice and skidded into an area with some concrete road construction barriers. He was able to slide to the passenger side of the car and the barrier went through the drivers side. If he had a seatbelt on he would have eaten the barrier. As it ended up he had a few cuts and that was it. This type of accident is very much not in the norm.

I live near a very rough stretch of highway with a great deal of accidents. Most of the deaths in those are people not wearing seatbelts.
