It's the governments fault it got out of hand. They thought the fire would go out on it's own (4 days ago!!!) from the weather in the morning so they decided not to attempt to put it out when it started. Now my freaking back yard is on fire and I'm put on stand by in case I need to do an emergency evacuation for you puny civilians.

I think you have some bad info there. We try to jump on new starts quickly. Sometimes, if there are a lot of them, you have to prioritize engines, crews, etc., but we never think the weather is going to put a fire out until it actually does rain at least .25 inches in a short period of time (minimum needed to penetrate canopy and soak ground) or snows a lot. I don't think either of those were in the forecast. Within hours of it starting, a Type I incident management team was ordered, which is the highest level of expertise you can throw at a fire.

That said, good luck with your home. I know how nerve-wracking it can be and it sucks to live with the uncertainty.

Basso: I am likely headed to The Wood Hollow Fire near Provo. I will know when I wake up. If not there, we'll likely start heading to CO as tomorrow is expected to be another bad day and more starts are expected. A tough fire started late this afternoon near Boulder, which could turn into another huge one.

I didn't see anything on the news about them trying to contain it when it started?, but it's good to know you guys tried. You live in CO rimrocker? I live right next to Fort Carson. Btw, I think they reported the cause of this fire is from arson?

A very close friend of mine has a home about 2 miles west of there, just west of Hwy 24, and she is terrified.

Been following this pretty closely, and now it looks like it has exploded east and may head into Colorado Springs proper, which is just unbelievable. Air Force Academy itself is in danger.

If ever there was a time for a torrential downpour, this is it.

65 mph winds from the west pushed the the fire out of containment and down into Queens canyon and then into the neighborhoods. There was not a lot that could have been done to prevent it.

I saw no evidence of anyone that "thought the fire would go out on it's own". They have been fighting it since it started on Sat. The concentration has not been on containment, but on trying to save structures. They saved cedar heights.....they saved manitou on Sunday. They have kept it from moving across 24 as well.

Be happy you're down south by Carson(actually not that far from me). I was expecting to be evac'ed on Sunday after Manitou, but the fire shifted northwest. Now the evac zone is coming from the north along 25.

Its such a shame. Colorado is a beautiful, beautiful state. I absolutely loved going there, even more so than Hawaii.
I really hope they stop this fire before it damages all the historic buildings and landscape there. :(

These fires won't destroy the beauty of Colorado... just as an fyi.

I was just there for 3 weeks, getting back just this past Sunday. We were up near the High Park fire. Fires are super scary, no doubt. But also natural. Certainly if started by arsonists, shooters, firecracker idiots, no, but the state has been building towards a perfect storm for fires over the last few years, 100% natural or not. From all the dead trees due to the beetles, to lower precipitations and increased temperatures.

    best of luck to all...

Well obviously it won't destroy it all, but parts will be decimated. If you've driven through the Bastrop State Park area recently you'll know what i'm talking about.

Decide to camp in Bastrop a few months ago. Depressing to say the least.

Certain fires will destroy rather than renew. If it burns hot enough, it will sterilize the soil. Nothing will grow and the topsoil will wash away. If you go up to where the Hayman fire was 10 years ago, there's still barren places.

Fire weather forecast for CO looks not good: http://199.141.1.20/7day/action/forecast/9

This is what we call extreme fire behavior. For us, it means pretty much what MoonDogg said... you triage the structures as best you can and don't get in front of the fire. For everyone else, it means don't try to be a hero and don't make the mistake of valuing your house more than your life. Pay attention to and heed the evacuation warnings. If you stay, it not only endangers you but also the firefighters, who may feel compelled to take chances they would not normally take in order to try to save you. The power behind these kinds of fires is enormous and can be unpredictable even to those who spend a lifetime studying fire behavior. Please, please, don't take chances.

At some point, the winds will die down and the humidities will go up. We'll then attack the fire instead of reacting as we're having to do now.
