What happens if you vote straight party ticket and continue to vote the rest of the ticket? Are your votes voided out?

Had a co-worker do this claiming he though the straight ticket was a vote for the party he supports.

you can do that i am sure. It just preselect some options for you. You still have to vote in some cases. For example, there are elections where you pick 4 out of 7 for some local position and 6 out of 7 are from one party, so you still have to pick the ones you want to vote for.

Voting straight ticket will automatically select the candidates for the party you support. You can, however, go through the rest of the ballot and select candidates who are not members of the party you voted straight ticket for and those votes will be counted.

You can choose your candidate regardless of the Straight Ticket vote at the top. That just pre-fills the candidates from the party you select, then you can go down through the ballot and choose who you want, regardless of the choice at the beginning.
