if anybody's getting attatchments from me...don't click on them. i don't know who the virus is targetting, because i don't have a contact list...but i know a lot of my friends are getting stuff from me that i'm not sending. just a warning, carry on.
please, for the love of god, everyone get some antivirus software! symantec/norton antivirus is awesome. it does email scanning and will scan mail when it's downloaded to you to catch viruses before they get to you and it will scan your mail on the way out to make sure you don't send any viruses. it also does full system scans scheduled for your convenience. please drop $30 for some kind of virus protection.
Go here now! Free Scanner. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Also a 30 day trial download of PC-Cillin from trend at www.trend.com
There any free virus scanners out there? tend.com just does it through website right? i would like a program but it doesnt matter just if anyone knows of one.
I bought SystemWorks last year and downloaded Internet Security right after that...... didn't want to spend another $40..... But it works great, I once turned off Internet Security during a download, and it was a virus. So Antivirus in SystemWorks warned me and it was quarantined. Why do I feel like a customer testimonial?!?!
This is the virus i have: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.yaha.k@mm.html aarg! hate it.
Allright, go ahead and laugh at me, I use AOL mail. I use symantec, and I update it often. Can you use symantec on aol? I also need to figure out how to use outlook, so I can use my Roadrunner Mail. I was going to make a thread about it, but I am too lazy. I'll make a thread on it sometime later.
Gosh I hate viruses. I haven't been PERSONALLY attacked by them since I started using Linux about four years ago, but at work that damned KLEZ virus has me furious. I'm somewhat of a pacifist, but if I could get my hands on the writer of KLEZ, I can't be responsible for my actions. I'd just filter it at the server, but the POS mail system we use (I didn't pick it . . . the higher-ups did . . . ) doesn't have any mail filtering at all. You can buy a $2K package to do that from a 3rd party, but that's not in the budget until next year . . . So another year with my users getting KLEZ virus emails . . . ARGH!!!! As far as AOL mail, I don't think you really have a problem as long as you don't open executable attachments. I'm not too familiar with AOL's interface, but I'm pretty certain you'll be fine as long as you are cautious.
Viruses do suck... and I didn't mean to sound all high and mighty in my previous post... It's just that I can't stress enough how important it is, to you and your friends, when antivirus programs do work. 3814, I feel your pain. The last major virus I had to deal with was sircam and no virus is fun...
kam, it doesn't really matter who your online provider is. AV packages will protect(somewhat) your computer no matter what. I don't know if the Norton email scanner will scan the AOhell email client during sending or recieving of mail, but it will let you know if there is a virus in the attachments you get. btw..I saw a "kam" at linuxnewbie dot com..that wouldn't happen to be you is it?
Kam - go here Under Email about 2/3rds of the way down the page look for "Setting Up Outlook Express (Windows)". It's a tutorial for setting up your email.
