Got an email this morning and I have no clue what it is. What is this and is it real? I don't remember sending any emails with attachments. I have also received many Postmaster warning in the last couple of weeks.
I've gotten a couple similar things. At first I thought they were viruses, but there were no attachments. Since then, I've been wondering if I've been infected without realizing it.
yes it sounds like you have been. it *could* be a hoax...but I doubt it. update your virus definitions, and run a full scan.
That sounds exactly like what the Netsky virus does. Right down to the .PIF attachment. Like R2k said, update your virus scan (either you aren't using an updated one or you're not using one at all) and run again. Last time I looked Netsky was a PAIN to remove, especially for the non-technical user - maybe they've simplified the process. Good luck.
I just did scan and it found no infection. Think it could be a fake e-mail? I have been getting those too. Fake paypal, ebay and something from abuse@gov.us, saying something about an illegal web site.
I actually had a similar problem. I sent an e-mail without an attachment to a friend and got a reply from the postmaster of his domain that I sent a mail with a virus (did not specify which virus). I have the newest virus scanner (Symantec) and a Norton Firewall and ran a scan and it did not reveal any virus at all. Moreover, I just sent the same e-mail again to the same guy afterwards, and it went through without a problem. I suspect that it was a problem on their side, not on mine.
In my opinion, you have not had a virus. Someone you know, who has your e-mail address on their computer, has been infected. A number of viruses send e-mails purporting to be from an address they find on your machine. It goes like this: Your friend is infected with a virus The virus chooses your address (which is on your friend's machine) as the one it'll put on its outgoing mails It sends a number of mails, with your address in the "From:" field The anti-virus of the recipient catches the mail, and blocks it The AV software attempts to inform the sender of the e-mail that it has been blocked. Looking at the forged header, it decides to send an e-mail to the "From:" address (which is yours) You receive the warning e-mail from the intended target
I think you're right. I just talked to my ISP tech support about another problem and I mention this e-mail, he said pretty much the same thing. Does anyone know of some kind of virus tech support hot line? One was mentioned on the news or it may have been the radio but I wasn't quick enough to write down the number. Oh and thanks everyone.
Crap. Didn't see you said you don't remember sending the email. There are viruses that spoof email addresses and do similar things to what yours is doing as well. We just tracked one person who was a victim of this on another forum I'm on. There's really no stopping it since you're not the one infected. Sorry for not catching that in your original post.
Eek! I didnt catch that either...reading comprehension...its your friend! yes...I agree with what Bailey said...someone else has been infected and it is spoofing your addy. just be sure to keep yours updated...you never know when you re next in the firing line.
