Great post Moes but how the heck can you guys stand to have sex only about once a month?

agreed. especially since you sound very mature about it. increasing the frequency will do no harm to you or your relationship. one can only assume you enjoy the act. why not do something you enjoy more often?

plus, the old joke is that you only have sex once a month after you get married, not before!

I'm not really going to go in any detail here, but as I said before it is mostly her and (every once in a while) my paranoia about getting preggers.

And to be quite clear, its not like its a "once a month" rule or anything, and there other "alternatives" if you catch my drift (No, not Anne Hathaway).

Plus we still want the wedding night to be somewhat special.

    ;)

every 14 year old should have a child like I did, I promise they will never have underage/pre-marital sex again. It's a fantastic deterrent. ;)

You don't have to worry about pregnancy. There is more than one place to go, if you catch my drift.

I couldnt agree more. Off topic, I think the rigid view of sex is why a large number of christian ministers and clergy end up in scandals (the ted haggard saga shows no sign of abating up here).

for those who don't know she gave birth last night, leaving me to question her mother's claim that she didn't about the pregnancy when she accepted the nomination. when was the nomination announced, four months ago?

Sarah Palin knew about the pregnancy at the time of the nomination and informed McCain about it prior to his selection.

Saving the Anne Hathaway for the wedding night?

I never really found her attractive until she said she liked it, now I'm extremely attracted to her.

Landlord, are you serious that you had a kid at 14?

Well as long as the once a month isn't during ovulation and you take reasonable precautions you should be OK.

So will there be sushi served out of the back door on the auspicious day. ;)

FYI I've always found Anne Hathaway very attractive back door sushi or not.

Moe, I personally believe we have a critical parenting crisis. Sex education can't fix it, sorry it is not effective, but so called abstinence training isn't any better without the parenting issues changed.

You have hit on the root of the issue in your own experience at home.

Virginity pledges are shallow at best. Good intentions and pledges are pretty much what you do if you lack the needed character to succeed in anything.

It's not any different that the rate of success of New Years Resolutions.

Second abstinence cannot be taught like an alternate to sex education because abstinence is a moral issue and has to be caught, in the heart.

In todays culture abstinence is not workable as a decision or promise.
It has to come deeper with the right motivation, purpose and joy.

I have seen this in church for 29 years. Pre-marital sex is the norm.

I see no difference in the church and out of church on this issue.

I don't expect any changes in this until there is a fundemental change in parenting.

I have 4 sons and one daughter. The greatest challenge I've had as a Christian is being a parent.

My children have grown now to move from 'greatest challenge' to greatest blessing in my life.

This was said by the prophet Malachi concerning Jesus:

He will turn the hearts of Fathers to children and the hearts of children to their Fathers.

I think that is one of the most important verses in the Bible.

Leave it up to judoka to come up with a compromise on this heated issue through a compromising position.

Hathaway reference in a virginity thread FTW!

ignorance: (n) - unawareness of, inexperience of, unfamiliarity with, innocence of, unconsciousness of, greenness about, oblivion about, nescience of.

abstinence: (n) - The act or practice of refraining from indulging an appetite, as for food.

Seems like abstinence is, by definition, ignorance of sex.

That seems a bit silly. You may as well say fidelity is ignorance of disloyalty, or lawfullness is ignorance of criminality, or continence is ignorance of crapping all over yourself, or fasting is ignorance of food, or insomnia is ignorance of sleep, or sleeping is ignorance of doing things.

It was a bit silly because it was a joke, admittedly an extremely dry one. I was just trying to point out that DonnyMost's post was true in a way, though not one that is particularly relevant to the conversation. I could have also made a pun on the biblical way of "knowing a woman."

But, your analogies, while funny, miss an important distinction. Abstinence is a pledge to NOT do something. Abstention is a willfull refusal to engage in a certain activity, not to replace it with anything else in particular. It is a conscious choice to remain ignorant of what it's like to engage in that act. The examples you rattle off aren't. I could draw distinctions between each, but well, that seems a bit silly.
