I'm not here to say who's to get credit for this, it goes around to everyone. I'm just wanting to pose the question, "Is our country in a moral decline?"

What do you base this on?

I think this is a good sign that our society is just fine. Of course, I'm the eternal optimist.

I think all the violent offendors went over to Europe for the Euro-Football(soccer) tournament. Otherwise, I can't figure out where they all went???

I don't think our society is just fine. I think there are...and always will be... lurkers waiting for the prime time to strike at the heart of this nation just when it's reeling in the satisfaction of knowing violent crime is down by over 10%. Don't get complacent based on these stats. The violent pukeheads are out there in waiting and the cops are waiting to arrive on the crime scene when it's too late because their writing Joe Sixpack a ticket for not wearing his seatbelt. Thank you, occifer.

The only reason I think our country is in moral decline is that we're losing as much ground as we're gaining-- spinning our wheels, if you will.

Was America morally stronger, 50 years ago?

Depends what you mean. There was certainly less depravity in the popular culture. But we also had an entire race of citizens who were socially discriminated against in one half of the country and legally discriminated against in the other.

Of course, coloring my view of things is my belief that at our current rate, we're approximately 30 years away from socialism in this country-- and I'm a sore loser. So, obviously, I think this society's pretty sick.

    "Want" it? Are you serious?

I'm merely being pragmatic. We currently have a system were 96 percent of federal taxes are paid by under 50 percent of the populace. This allows politicians to buy the votes of the other half of the voters-- it doesn't cost those voters anything to expand the government in their own interest.

Once the voters become addicted to the narcotic of basically free government goodies, they're going to expect more and more. The two major political parties won't be able to seriously suggest cutting anything. Remember what happened when the GOP suggested that the rate of increase in Medicare and Medicaid be cut? The Democrats flat-out lied and said the GOP wanted to actually CUT the programs. The GOP suffered a serious PR hit and has been on the defensive ever since.

And as GWB's campaign indicates, the GOP's learned their lesson. They're every bit as interested in vote-buying as the Donkeys are.

So, we have the following recipe for socialism:

    * A fat, lazy, uninformed and disinterested majority that pays very little in taxes and chooses their political alignments based on the services a particular candidate promises them

    * A two-party system in which both parties are falling all over themselves to buy votes by promising good and services

    * A political climate in which class envy rules the day

If you think we have a bloated, intrusive government now, just wait until the boomers are retired and Generation X is running the show.
