So the club basically had to place Villareal on waivers today so that he'd given his unconditional release.

Pretty classless move...but not because he refused to go down to Round Rock and work on his game...but because the club will now be on the hook for the remaining amount of money on his contract, despite him rejecting the assignment. And even if he signs with another team, the Astros still have to pay.

Hmm...it is kind of a greedy, chickens**t thing to do on his part; but then again maybe Wade shouldn't have signed him to an extension in the first place.

I don't care as long as I never have to see him pitch in an Astros uniform again... :D

Wow, talk about an acquisition COMPLETELY backfiring. It just seems to me like the Astros are snakebit when it comes to making trades.....either that or it's our propensity to hire clueless GMs. Thanks for forcing Hunsicker out the door, Drayton! We owe ya one, buddy!

This pickup might be the most disappointing. I never expected he'd be this bad. I don't think there was anything in his history to suggest he'd be this bad. I really thought he'd be one of the 7th or 8th inning pitchers on a regular basis this season.

The good news is Geary is a helluva lot better than I expected.

I couldnt agree more, MadMax. There was also nothing to suggest that Villareal would not be a quality reliever coming into the season. His history showed that he was very good quality middle reliever. That sad part was we had to give up Josh Anderson for nothing. I know Anderson is not all that, but I for some reason liked him.

That's kind of weird how that works IMO. You demote a guy for performing like crap but because he's a veteran under contract...you still have to pay the guy for being a crappy player who is unwilling to work on his game at the next lowest level because he rejected the assignment. Now, he can either f off with the money or go to another team. Regardless, we still have to pay him.

I don't competely understand why this is so lopsided in his favor. Yea...it makes the move seem completely disastrous. If the Astros are giving away free money, then tell me where to line up. I could swing the bat a few times and reject an assignment. lol
