I watched the documentary "3 Points" on Hulu yesterday, the one with Tracy McGrady. McGrady's guide throughout the movie was John Prendergast. The film gives a glimpse of the state of things in the refugee camps there, but (in my view) said little about the origins or politics behind the conflict. I found the following lengthy debate, held this past April at Columbia University, between Prendergast and Mahmood Mamdani (author of Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics, and the War on Terror). They have very different takes on the crisis and how it should be resolved. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yGOpfH_5_pY&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yGOpfH_5_pY&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I watched. I think the professor is very pragmatic and I tend to agree with him that violence begets violence. other than that I really don't know much about the conflict and I agree with the professor that the savedarfur effort doesn't focus on what the issues are. conflicts like that as we learned with Iraq are difficult for outsiders to understand
I've posted this video before and a thread about Mamdani's new book, but there wasn't much of a response: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=171064 http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=4658042&postcount=36 In the first link I also included a link to the journal article the book was based on and a review of the book itself. I purchased the book and read it as well. I would highly recommend it.
Why does Prendergast deny his association with SaveDarfur? His name is under the Board of Directors on SaveDarfur's website. http://www.savedarfur.org/pages/board
