Is there any way to tell what codec a video file (avi) uses? The modding site that I downloaded it from does not mention what format or codec is used. I'm very lost on how to proceed.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to AV stuff, but I do know that when I use the VLC Media Player , I've been able to play practically anything without worrying about codecs.

Download GSPOT codec finder. It tells you what you need to view the movie

VLC is the only way to go. Way less codec issues.

Use this, then get what you need. Codec packs can clutter up the computer.

so, I look up the file and it was a simple xvid codec, I had xvid already installed but windows media player still didnt play it. I downloaded VLC and it worked fine, still dont understand why WMP didnt play it when I had the codec the whole time.
