So, I have no internet offered at my house besides Verizon DSL 3Mbps. My neighbor literally paid Verizon $10k in February to run fiber internet (300Mbps) half a mile from a substation to his house. He runs three businesses out of his house. The line runs from a half mile on one side of my house to his house, about a quarter mile on the other side of my place. Literally right by my house. (Technically the line is at the street, about 100 yards from my house, and across the street) I've called Verizon numerous times (probably 6) questioning who to talk to to get them to install at my house. Literally have heard every excuse in the book. Covid. Not offered in my area. It's not them. Etc. I've told them I can bring them literally four households overnight, and if they need more, tell me how many, and I'll find them. I've asked how much money they'd want, despite local and national level government loans to the tune of billions given to them for this explicit purpose (just talking during the pandemic here). I've asked for more phone numbers even. I'm trying to press the issue because I commute 2 hours and 15 minutes, one way, every day. If I get proper internet, I can work from home a day or so a week. I have tried every other alternative I can think of. TMobile home internet isn't available. I'm on Star Link's waiting list. I currently hotspot, but only get 30Gbs a month. I don't know that my hotspot is fast enough, and I don't think I have enough data to do what I need. Any advice, particularly from Verizon people in the know, would be greatly appreciated.
Your neighbor pays commercial rates, which is $$$. Unless you're willing to pay several hundred a month, they will not give you the time of day. Just be happy Star Link is just around the corner. Another alternative is to set up a point to point link to your neighbors house if he is cool with it and you have a LOS.
I got a notice sometime last year that I can get StarLink, but after reading the price, the speeds, how long I might have to wait, and the fact you can have inconsistent connections and latency issues, I decided to just go with cheap ol' Spectrum when I dumped AT&T Uverse last year. FYI, if I go to StarLink's site now, it says the hardware costs $499, service is $99/month, S&H is $50, if I order today I may not have my order fulfilled until late 2022. Damn. lol.
Wow!! That’s a lot of driving! Obviously it’s worth it for you or you wouldn’t be doing it. ....... ....... .......
Does your neighbor have some Technical chops and have you had a discussion with him about everything that he went through to get his line? If you do get a meeting with him, have your questions mapped out ahead of time. What is the most you will pay a month if you do get a line? If the LOS to your neighbor is iffy, is there a two story house or something to help?
Just have your neighbor call them and add a 4th business (your house) and then transfer the ownership, I mean since he already added the infrastructure it should hopefully be free/a lot cheaper. It's definitely because of the commercial accounts (as mentioned). I don't know if you tried calling their commercial line but that might be another option, since the cable is all run it should still be less for the overall job hopefully. Or share his internet, run your own cable/repeater obviously w/ him knowing and pay him (los is interesting too). I know if I had multiple business accounts running I'd be willing to sublease it, lol if I was him and didn't mind breaking some rules/laws...
Interesting points about LOS, which I admittedly am not super familiar with. Technically, it wouldn't be that illegal, either. One of his businesses is a farm, of which a fair portion surrounds my property on two sides. I sublet about 12 acres to him for supplemental use for his farm, so I also have some leverage there. It could be used under the guise of allowing him internet access for his business while he's on his farm. I may have to try that route with him, and he may be open to it, just have to do some research. Thanks guys.
