Thank you for finding all those drafts. They are interesting to look at.

I did a little more research on the draft. I was just curious to see how accurate these mock drafts from the "experts" really are. Personally I consider Andy Katz from ESPN to be one of the most knowledgeble guys around as far as draft coverage goes.

I decided to look at past mock drafts done by Katz and see how accurate he was. These drafts are from the day before the draft so he should have all the info by the last day. Also I only looked at the top 15 picks because those are the most important to us Rocket fans.

2001- Katz's Final Mock Draft link
    1. Wizards: Kwame Brown - correct
    2. Bulls: Tyson Chandler - correct
    3. Hawks: Shane Battier - wrong
    4. Bulls: Eddy Curry - correct
    5. Warriors: Eddie Griffin - wrong
    6. Grizzlies: Jason Richardson - wrong
    7. Nets: Rodney White - wrong
    8. Cavs: Joe Johnson - wrong
    9. Pistons: Troy Murphey - wrong
    10. Celtics: Pau Gasol - wrong
    11. Celtics: Kedrick Brown - correct
    12. Sonics: Diop - wrong
    13. Rockets: Vladimir Radmonavich - wrong
    14. Warriors: Micheal Bradley - wrong
    15. Magic: Steven Hunter - correct

    2001 results: 5 correct and 10 wrong

Andy Katz's 2000 Final Mock Draft link
    1. Nets: Kenyon Martin - correct
    2. Grizzlies: Stomile Swift - correct
    3. Clippers: Darius Miles - correct
    4. Bulls: Chris Mihm - wrong
    5. Magic: Marcus Fizer - wrong
    6. Hawks: Mike Miller - wrong
    7. Bulls: DerMarr Johnson - wrong
    8. Cavs: Courtney Alexander - wrong
    9. Rockets: Jerome Moiso - wrong
    10. Magic: Keyon Dooling - wrong
    11. Celtics: Joel Pryzbilla - wrong
    12. Mavs: Etan Thomas - correct
    13. Magic: Quentin Richardson - wrong
    14. Pistons: Jamal Crawford - wrong
    15. Bucks: Desmond Mason - wrong

    2000 results: 4 correct and 11 wrong

I could not dig up any older mock draft by Katz other than these two. The results are 9 picks correct and 21 wrong for a surprisingly poor 30% correct rate. More disheartening is that 5 of Katz correct picks came within the first 3 or 4 picks which are generally more common knowledge than later picks.

I would have thought someone like Katz with inside info and much time watching and learning the draft elgible players' games he would have gotten more choices correct.

If anyone has more of Katz's old mock drafts or how closely other "experts" were than please share what you know.

I wonder how close the contestents in previous Clutch's Mock Draft Madness have been when compared to the experts.

OK, I decided to look at how well nbadraft.net predicted the results in past drafts as well.

In 2001 nbadraft.net only got 3 of the first 15 top picks correct.

In 2000 they got 3 correct out of the top 15 again.

In 1999 they also only got 3 out of 15 correct.

My question is why is it so hard to predict the players that are going to be drafted in the correct order? I know teams send out false information and don't reveal who they are going to pick unless its the number one pick, but you would think that these experts who make their living predicting the draft would be able to do a little better.

Another question, who is the best "expert" in predicting the draft? Is there any website or sports writer that has been more successful opredicting the draft over the years than others?

    Here is Katz 3rd Mock

It's very interesting. He has Qyntel Woods dropping all the way to 16th to the Sixers. Meaning that the Rockets would have a chance to draft Woods.

Great job, everyone! I was looking for something just like this on the internet, but couldn't find anything. I faintly remember there being a website w/ this info and links.
But anyway, thanks for all the hard work.

On why it is so hard to get players right in a mock draft.

I have done an NFL Mock Draft for about 8 years now, and I can tell you why it is so hard. Aside from the top picks where teams don't have to worry so much about movement, teams lie and will leak false information. They don't want anyone to know what they are doing so someone can trade ahead of them or take the guy they want. In fact, I had heard that some NFL teams had hired people to plant false rumors in chat rooms and Bulletin Boards. (Who is the mole here!:D ) A good example might be the Bengals when they took Levi Jones. He was their guy for weeks, but they didn't want to tip their hand and you never, ever heard Jones' name in an article relating to the Bengals. Ditto with the Colts and Dwight Freeney.

Its also kind of like picking the NCAA tournament. Once you get one wrong the whole thing starts breaking down.
