I think most ClutchFans agree that the person making the personnel decisions is JVG. What I don't know is Luther Head the first draft choice of JVG or has he had draft choices with the Knicks that were attributed to him. I personally have alot of faith in JVG choices for players and I do believe that he will make a solid choice at #8. But I would feel better if I knew what he has done in the past.
I doubt JVG was calling the shots in NY. Seems like they always have GMs that do most of the personel moves. In fact I heard a rumor that the outgoing GM in 1999 (Dave Checketts?) drafted Frederic Weiss in order to stick it to the franchise before he got canned.

There is no evidence to indicate JVG had much draft input with the knicks, who drafted lousily while he was there under Checketts/Grunfeld and then Llayden. Though in fairness they had low/no picks most years having traded most of them away before he got there, with #15 Frederic Weis being the most infamous of them. I don't see Weis as being a Van Gundy pick and recall hearing stories about him being opposed to it, though I can't remember when/where/why. EDIT: m_cable remembers them too I see.
JVG is no longer the man in charge of draft picks. He basically said so on the radio. We have a new sheriff (GM) in town. JVG's primary input is on decisions involving current NBA players, which he feels is his specialty.
Not that I don't believe you, but I don't remember hearing this. It is true that by all accounts he really had no input in NY. Of the three the only one with a track record of drafting is CD.
Yep, it was on 610. CD and Morey will be making the selection, JVG will have input, but his goals are different than the franchises. He would rather win now (last year of his contract) and the team may want to take a longer term approach. DD
How'd you like to be the player picked by a franchise that has a coach who doesn't necessarily want you on the team?
Maybe I'm not as optimistic as you, but I don't see how we have a chance to win now. Well, at least not if when you say 'win' you mean contend for a championship. Yes, we had one of the worst years for injuries we've ever had last season, but that isn't the only reason we lost. We have two great players and then maybe three-five players capable of being decent to good back ups in the NBA. I understand that with Yao and McGrady healthy for the whole season we could have easily won 50+ games, but that's a far cry from getting deep into the playoffs. And with our current lack of depth, I don't see how we can be expected to get out of the first round. We would need a grand slam of an off-season to go into next season as contenders in my opinion. I can see doing it over the next two or three, but next season seems unlikely to me.
It was on......a couple of weeks ago. JVG has always maintained that he doesn't follow the college players or participate in the NBA Draft. Says he just doesn't have the time to do it.... Do a search, there was either a thread started or it was talked about in a thread.

When Yao was drafted...the Rox should have known at the very least it would have taken Yao 3 years to develop... and expected to lose for those years...I guess Tmac coming over changed that and the team to a "contender"... I myself was on a 5 year plan... year 1 Draft a center 3 to 5 years to develop year 2 Draft a forward 3 to 4 years to develop year 3 Draft a forward 3 to 4 years to develop year 4 Draft a guard 1 to 3 years to develop year 5 Draft a guard 1 to 3 years to deveop I guess the only comfort is... it took Dream over 10 years to win his first title...
I think it was this interview, but it isn't mentioned in the discussion. He said that he doesn't watch college ball, so he is not the best person to evaluate the talent. He also said that he knows more about current NBA players than any other person in the organization, so he would have more input on transactions involving them. Basically, what was said before... it sounds like he will have input, but he is not the person evaluating and scouting talent for the draft.
Man, what a monster Shawn Kemp was. He used to give Dream fits. But what a waste of talent he turned out to be - he couldn't push himself away from the dinner table. But at least he was generous with his excellent genes, and someday there will be several players in the NBA who call him father.
