Hey everyone, need some advice, opinions and ideas.

My wife and I and my 2-yr. old son, along with my mother-in-law  , are all looking to go on a short vacation somewhere together but I need some ideas on where would be a good place to go.

The consensus amongst us has been Galveston, which is OK, but (outside of Moody Gardens) there isn't a whole lot we all would like to do together. Schlitterbahn is out there but I'm not much of a waterpark person, my mother-in-law sure isn't and my son is too young. Of course, my wife and mother-in-law would probably like to go down the Strand and some sight-seeing, but I've been there enought to know NOTHING changes on the Strand and me and my son get cranky walking in the heat and crowds for no point what-so-ever, lol.

Anyway, a nice getaway that has some fun for the whole family, but not too over the top.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and just FYI - Vacation with mother-in-law not my cup of tea, but she is recently widowed, wants to take us out for being there for her and is paying for most of the trip.

Yeah, if you are sticking close to Houston I would second this one.

The mom-in-law can watch the kid while you and your wife ride the big-boy coasters at Fiesta Texas. Then maybe she will watch him again as yall have a night on the river walk etc.

I'd say go to Rockport, but the Big Tree of Lamar isn't all that big and is a huge disappointment.

    There, I said it.

Why not Vegas...Just got back and had a blast...Take her to the Dam, shows, etc...

If you have to drive, I'd say San Antonio...We go there every summer and stay near Fiesta Texas/Sea World at the Hyatt...Really cool, can be kinda expensive depending on the day, but worth every penny...

You could also stay at the Riverwalk, which would be cheaper...

i don't think this is what you're looking for but if you just want to relax, going to a bed & breakfast out in the country is a great weekend vacation. i know a great one in Chapel Hill (1 hour drive from downtown). it's quite, stars are plenty and bright, and of course they cook a mean breakfast for you.

Thanks for the input and I think we are going to spend the week in San Antonie after all. It should be nice.

But, for anyone that has been there, is Fiesta Texas a good place to take my 2-yr. old? Is there a lot for him to do there?

I just don't want to spend the money for all of us to go and it's a waste. I mean, my wife and I will ride some stuff, but the trip would really be more for him.

    Thanks for the info again.

Why can't mom-in-law stay home with your 2-year old son, while you and your wife go?

    I would.

I like Fiesta Texas. It has a variety of rides for all ages. Also, don't forget about Sea World.

Well, like I said in my original post, she is flipping most of the bill. Her husband suddenly passed away in March. She wants to take my wife and I on a vacation to kind of thank us for being there for her and she wants to go to some places like Seaworld and stuff with my son at the same time. My mother-in-law and I have a pretty good relationship, probably A LOT better than most guys do, so I'm thankfull for that. But yea, not looking forward to 5 days on a trip with her. Luckily we are getting seperate rooms at least.

I'm going to try my hardest to keep my patience and remember what this trip is REALLY about. But, I guarantee that I'll think twice about pushing her in with Shamu at some point in the week. :D
