I told y'all that if they played Sloan more, then they would win big time. HAHA. Good to see him get more touches today even if I wasn't a top tier team that they played.

chievous, who did we beat? No one here is pissing and moaning, but please don't act like we won a game vs. a Top 10 opponent.

So we beat the crap out of a lower tiered Big 12 team. Would you like a smiley sticker? :)

I'd like to see what we do against CU.

I agree with you, Smokey, that we didn't beat anyone of significant noteworthiness, but we did beat the only team we had scheduled to play this week.

I don't see anything wrong with being glad about wiping some of the bad taste from last week off of the pallet.

I personally am glad about today's win because, coupled with losses by South Carolina and probably Washington, we'll almost certainly move back into the top 10. as long as we win out the rest of our games, we stand a very good chance of finishing in the top 10 this year. that, despite the bitterness from last week, would still be a significant achievement.

and I'm also very glad to see that the Horns committed to the running game today, and cedric benson had a bit of a coming out party with his 131 yards.

no, he didn't do that against a great defense, but he did it against the only defense he could do it against today.

so alls I'm saying is, like annette bening sings in American Beauty, "don't rain on my parade!".:p

I, personally, am not acting like we beat a Top 10 opponent. I am, however, very glad about today's win. we needed to get back moving in the right direction.

lastly, I agree with you. . . we will know more after next week's game.

we will beat colorado next week and as for your FSU would kick UT's butt in the other thread reference, i think youre mistaken, this isnt vintage florida state and even then i think we can hold our own and win

You really think so. What has UT done to show you that we can play well against a big time opponent in a big time game?

    Let's see

    2001 OU L
    2000 Oregon L
    2000 A&M W
    2000 OU L
    1999 A&M L
    1999 Nebraska L
    1999 Nebraska W
    1999 Arkansas L
    1999 Kansas State L

Please point me in the right direction. I stand behind my statement FSU would kick UT's butt. It's not about vintage Florida State. Vintage FSU would kill UT. I'm not a Nole fan by any means, but the current FSU team would give UT problems.

On paper UT is the best team in the nation. Until UT shows some results, I'm not changing my mind. This is not a big game team.

1st off 1999 isnt a good benchmark, we had to adjust to life without ricky, play at at a hostile k state and didnt have near the offensive talent(wrs werent here) we have now, arkansas-major got hurt, besides its a little hard for guys to play out the string-but alas no excuse, i concede this game, a&m major got food poisoning a day or so before the game, the aggies had a special day to commemorate the bonfire tragedy and dont forget the alleged prank calls at 3am-this one i chalk to simms inexperience/extra emotion playing at kyle field with the bonfire, as for nebraska-major ticked them off with his calculus comments and its hard to beat a team twice in the same season, but i think it was more the former

2000-OU(we got cocky, bottom line and the qb rotation didnt allow the offense to get in sync-flat out we just werent ready to play and got rolled by the NC), Oregon-we actually wouldve won this game had bj,and roy not dropped 3 straight td strikes by simms so that doesnt qualify

2001-OU-this was a well played game by both teams, i agree we shouldve won-a little offensive dictation by davis wouldve gone a long way, but ous td was on a fluke option and OU's d is prob the best in the country/while i agree we shouldve won this isnt worthy consideration of a choke job or a team that cant win a big game, considering the yr before

therefore while the scoreboard reads 2 wins 7 losses, it think in terms of underachieving performances you have 4 or 5 out of the 9, depending on how you want to rule the 99 aggie game-because ill concede 2000 ou, 1999 neb, 1999 kstate, 1999 arkansas, but a&m and oregon and ou this yr werent bad performances all of which games we couldve and shouldve won-but 1999 a&m game is understandable, orgeon we technically outplayed/deserved to win if we catch one of the 3 passes, and OU we played well enough to win-it was a great game

1999, we played K-State at home and they kicked our ass.

In that year we had to adjust so much, a certain QB also broke many UT passing records...yet he's on the bench now.

It's not just the last few years. Mack Brown has consistently shown that he can't win the big games. And in those big games, the offense, led by his boyfriend Greg Davis, doesn't show up. It happened against FSU every year, and now it's happening here.

Even when UNC was a top 10 team, the talent gap between them and Florida St. was tremendous. You can't blame him for losing those games.

This is Mack Brown's first year with a team fully comprised of HIS players with the experience necessary to succeed. (at Texas) He said before last year that this wasn't a national championship team-- the disappointment came from the high expectations you guys put on them. Same with 1999. This is the first year Mack has his guys at Texas with big game experience, and they've done pretty damn well. We may have lost to OU, but they are a great team. They've won 19 games in a row, #2 in the country, #1 in the BCS... and we played them almost even the entire game. We just had a couple of breaks go against us, and we lost. It happens.

Also, Texas has just moved up to 8th in the coaches poll. A run for the Rose Bowl may not be over with, if you look at the teams ahead of us.

    Miami
    Oklahoma
    Nebraska
    Virginia Tech
    Oregon
    UCLA
    Florida

Miami and Virginia Tech play each other. One of those has to drop out.

Oklahoma and Nebraska play each other, and one of those will drop out.

UCLA and Oregon play each other, and one of those will drop out.

Hypothetically, let's say Miami, OU, and UCLA win those games. Then you are left with:

    Miami
    Oklahoma
    UCLA
    Florida

Florida still has potential stumbling blocks against South Carolina, FSU, and Tennessee.

UCLA still has tough games at Washington State and at USC.

Oklahoma could easily lose to Nebraska (or vice versa) in the Big 12 championship.

If Texas wins out, they should be 5th even if all these other teams go undefeated. They could actually be 4th with an impressive win over Colorado and if the Gators look unspectacular. We would need a lot of luck to have OU-Nebraska split, and then to have UCLA and Oregon both lose, but it is definitely in the realm of possibility. It happened to Florida St. last year. Keep hope alive! :)

If there are a bunch of 1-loss teams, the computers will rate UT the lowest due to the weak schedule. We also wouldn't get any of the new "bonus points" over top 15 BCS teams. The only good opponents UT will have faced will be OU (loss), Colorado and possibly A&M (currently unranked). All the Pac-10 teams will have a hellish schedule. OU and Nebraska both would have better schedules. Florida certainly would. Miami would have played FSU, VTech, and Washington, which might be a wash depending on how those teams do.

Our only remote chance, in my opinion, would be for A&M & Nebraska to run the table, giving OU two conference losses. Then we have to beat a 10-1 A&M, followed by an 11-0 Nebraska in the Big 12 and end up in the top 2 in the polls. It also helps our strength of schedule tremendously to beat a #1 Nebraska. AND, all those other teams would have to cooperate and have one loss.

Bottom line: It probably ain't gonna happen. :(

as much hype as it gets, we're suffering from the relative weakness of the Big 12's mid-to-lower tiered teams.

even though our 1 loss was to a much, much better opponent than florida's [ou vs. auburn], they're going to stay ahead of us because their wins over lsu, mississippi state and whoever else they beat in the SEC are going to look much better than our wins over texas tech, oklahoma state, etc.

I think that, if the talent gap between Texas and the weak schools [tech, osu, mizzou, kansas, baylor, iowa st.] could actually shrink a little, Texas' might stand a better chance at winning a national title.

or maybe not. not many SEC schools have won in recent years. you had Tennesse that one year. I can't think of any others. I don't count the Alabama title in '93 because that was an entirely different system.

anyway, my point [or my question] is: is it better to have the brutal conference schedule helping your bcs standings in the event of a loss? or is it better to have the situation that florida state has had the last few years, where they were just heads and shoulders above a weak football conference?

FSU's recent dominance would lead me to believe that you really might be better off being the big fish in the little pond than trying to be the big fish [florida, ucla, michigan] in a pond full of other big fish.

if the Big 12 can get to a point where Texas, A&M, OU, Nebraska, K-State and Colorado are legitimate football powerhouses, and where Baylor, Missouri, Texas Tech, Kansas, Iowa State and OSU can get to the level of competitiveness that you see at places like Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn and Alabama. . . that will be some intense college football throwing down.

as it is, I'm afraid shanna's right. we're not going to be able to get past florida or ou or nebraska or maybe even miami [even if all those teams finish with one loss] because of the strength of schedule.

Texas' "strength of schedule" is, I think, VERY misleading this year. people around the nation, and most importantly, the BCS view their schedule as weak. however, the one game they lost was hardly to a "weak" team. in my opinion, they lost to the best team in the country.

unfortunately, the rest of their schedule doesn't even hardly give them the opportunity to prove that they might be the 2nd best team in the country RIGHT NOW.

now there's a quote that will get the Haters out, but based on empirical evidence alone, there's nothing to suggest that they aren't the 2nd-best team in the country.

if you accept that ou is the best, well, Texas played them awfully tough.

reason #532,487 to hate the college football system for deciding a champion.

what other sport relies so heavily on computer data?
what other sport so heavily penalizes a team for losing once in an entire season?
what other sport takes a team's destiny out of its hands as much because of things like schedule that are decided years in advance and are not flexible because of traditional conferences?

what other sport doesn't have a playoff?

we had to adjust to life without ricky, play at at a hostile k state and didnt have near the offensive talent(wrs werent here) we have now

That's a poor excuse. Like RM95 mentioned, in 1999 Major Applewhite, without Ricky Williams and the Big 3 WR's, broke 40 UT records.

Plus Mack's second biggest win occurred in 1999 over Nebraska. If you negate Kansas State, then negate Nebraska as well. I didn't mention the 1998 win over Nebraska because then I would have to include the 1998 loss to UCLA. UT did beat Miss St. in 1998 but we also choked in a not so big game at Tech.

a&m major got food poisoning a day or so before the game

I'll give you this game because the backup QB was not prepared to play. However, I still blame this loss on coaching. Backup QB's led their team to victory all the time (see White of OU). Mack did not have the team ready to play.

we got cocky, bottom line and the qb rotation didnt allow the offense to get in sync-flat out we just werent ready to play and got rolled by the NC

Whose fault is that? Big game. Not a big game team.

we actually wouldve won this game had bj,and roy not dropped 3 straight td strikes by simms so that doesnt qualify

We also could have won a national championship if we didn't lose to Stanford and OU. Should have. Would have. Could have. Big game. Not a big game team. You gotta be clutch.

while i agree we shouldve won this isnt worthy consideration of a choke job or a team that cant win a big game, considering the yr before

We had one year to prepare. We lost to a backup QB. Where was Simms? Where were our Big 3 WR's? Blame Greg Davis. It doesn't matter. A loss is a loss. OU made the plays they had to make to win.

the talent gap between them and Florida St. was tremendous

Back to back 10 win seasons. Doesn't look like UNC had a tremendous talent gap. Mack just couldn't win the big game.

This is Mack Brown's first year with a team fully comprised of HIS players with the experience necessary to succeed. (at Texas)

Great. Can I hold you to this statement next year?
