The counterargument is Vandy, who would be in right now if they had a big OOC win. They had a pretty normal SEC schedule. Got Texas and Alabama on the road and lost to them. Good wins against Tennessee and Mizzou. Had bad luck with SoCar, Auburn and LSU all being bad. But overall, they went 10-2 with a reasonable SEC schedule, were the highest scoring team in the SEC by a large margin, have a Heisman candidate, and had only 2 losses to top-tier teams on the road and are on the outside looking in.

Give them a big non-conference win and they jump Texas, BYU, Miami, and potentially Notre Dame. A loss will of course hurt, but a win helps. And I don't think top-tier programs schedule out of fear.

Except that's not what it is. No one contradicted themselves, and no one ever said it's only about head to head or strength of schedule or whatever. He's creating a strawman so he can argue against it. If they were just looking at record, why is BYU below 3 loss teams? Why are a bunch of 2 loss teams below Texas?

Every team that will make it has an argument over Texas. Texas has an argument over some of them. SOMEONE will get left out. It's not like it's some simple equation to pick the 12 best teams - no one ever is going to agree on who those teams are. College football has tried polls, computers, committees, combos of them all, and no one will ever agree. When it was 2 teams, the fight was over #3. When it was 4, the fight was over #5. Now it's over #13. In March Madness, people ridiculously argue over who the 69th best team is.

Coaches have to whine when they aren't included, but it doesn't make it any more logical. Don't lose 3 games and don't look awful in several others. You can only get so many mulligans when there are only 12 playoff teams. It would be funny if Texas stops playing good OOC teams in a few yearsa and then is in Vandy's situation and then he can whine about being left out for not having a good enough schedule.

Guess it comes down to who you consider good OOC teams. Vandy handled VaTech and while they haven’t been very good lately, think they were probably considered a quality opponent when it was scheduled.Will the other SEC teams get dinged when they play FSU and OkSt? Are Louisville and Houston considered good OOC games?

Edit: Just looked it up and here are biggest OOC opponents for some of the current CFP teams the next 4 years:

Georgia - Georgia Tech, FSU?
Oregon - Baylor
Indiana - No P4 opponent until 2030
Texas Tech - Mississippi State (2028)
A&M - Arizona State
OU - SMU (after finishing series with Michigan)
BYU - Cal

Right now, Ohio State, Bama and Texas have the hardest upcoming OOC games scheduled.
