I just reformatted my computer, and I tried to hook up an external 500 gig hard drive to my laptop to transfer some files over, and i get this message: hi-speed usb device plugged into non-hi-speed usb hub I click on it, and it says "there are no hi-speed usb controllers installed on this computer." Does anybody know how to fix this? Thanks.
If you have a USB hub attatched before the External drive...then you need to install the drivers for the USB hub. If the External HD is plugged in directly, then you need to install the USB drivers for your USB ports.
you have a usb 2.0 device being connected to usb 1.1 Now the device should still work fine the only problem will be is that the transfer of files from your laptop to the hard drive will be slow. Very slow actually if you are moving large volume of files. A few hours for a few gigs worth of stuff. If you want to get usb 2.0 ports on your laptop you will need to get a pc card (or pcmca whatever you want to call it) for your laptop and then hook up the drive to the usb 2.0 ports on the card. Cards usually go from 35-50 bucks, they could be cheaper now.
It sounds like after re-installing your OS the USB controllers were not recognised as 2.0, to verify this, go into device manager. Right click on My Computer, click on Manage, Click on Device Manager. Look under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and see if there is an Enhanced controller (will probably look different than the image below). <br> <a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/4247/usbenyh1.jpg" border="0" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" /></a> <br> If there is not then the usb 2.0 controller card drivers are not installed (this is assuming that the computer has usb 2.0 ports).
