Three tope ten teams fall today: Duke loses to Virginia Tech UCLA loses to Oregon Alabama loses to Arkansas Discuss
To me the only real surprise was the Duke loss. But even then, upsets will not be too uncommon now that conference play has started.
yeah even that one.. VT has played Duke tough jsut about every time they've met in the last 3 years I think.
Except for the Duke loss the others were conference road games. I say this every season the upsets start happening when teams play conference road games. The underdog teams just seem to get up more for the conference rivals. Things will get a bit goofy from here on out.
Duke's number 5 ranking wasn't going to last long, even as homers we all knew that. Also, having watched every game, its clear that a lack of a go to scorer would burn us (3 mins without a bucket in OT) and Paulus has been extremely ordinary all season. However, I can't really call this a big home loss since school starts on the 10th for us, so the majority of the student body which creates the crazy atmosphere was at home for winter break. Having been to a game during a school break, the atmosphere is pitiful, even if seats are filled, and the team is hurt by not having the energy they are accustomed to hearing.
UCLA was not a suprise to me... I can't believe they haven't lost before this. I only say that because the Cats (despite the final score) took them to the wire in Hawaii and to be honest, we were struggling the whole game. They are very talented though, so I expect them to rally for their next game. Duke losing wasn't really a surprise either... like DukeRocket said, they have some pretty obvious weaknesses at the moment, but I have no doubt someone will step up as the season progresses. Coach K is good at getting people to play to their potential. The Bama/Arkansas game was only a suprise because of the margin of victory. Every game in the SEC is a toss up.. yes even games with LSU and Florida. As much as our conference tends to get scrutinized as a football conference, every basketball game in the SEC is tough and that is especially true on the road. Thankfully my Cats pulled it out at Ole Miss or I really would have been disappointed!
Woo Pig! Hopefully this wasn't a fluke for the Razorbacks, as I have season tickets and the games I've been to so far have been really boring. Too bad I missed this one at home, being sick with the stomach flu! I'd love it if we could somehow pull off back to back upsets...
The biggest suprise in college basketball this week was that Caltech actually won a game. They had lost 207 consecutive games previouslly. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070107/ap_on_sp_co_ga_su/bkc_caltech_wins
