Is he projected as a guy that could be a starter with some more work? Or was he drafted with the idea of keeping him in the bullpen?
He was actually claimed on waivers from the Rockies earlier this year. I assume since they eventually started him in Round Rock, they probably want to see him compete as a starter. Based on last night, he definitely needs to be "stretched out", but I can't comment as to how he looked in RR when he started. EDIT: What I liked was that almost all of his pitches had movement. Rarely did he throw anything straight.
just listening to mctaggert on 790, he said none of these call ups are projected to be apart of the astros anytime soon. even though saccromano is 27. sheez. me thinks the poopura era is still lingering.
Saccomano's problem is that they have Wigginton, Blum and Berkman next year to man the corner spots. It can be argued that someone deserves a chance over Blum, but he can also play SS, 2B and is the "absolute emergency" catcher. With Tejada and Matsui penciled in at SS and 2B, that only leaves 1 or 2 other infielders and they have to be able to step in and start regularly at 2B or SS.
They haven't resigned Loretta to next year have they? I'm guessing they'd let him take his at-bats next year.
The problem is that if they do re-sign Loretta, he can play 2B for an extended period, unlike Saccomanno. In addition, Loretta can play all the IF positions. Let's not get too excited over 1 at bat and a solid minor league campaign.
What's the point of having two jack-of-all trade infielders, if you need that many it means your players are seriously injury prone.
Barring any trades and jail time, the following will be the infield situation for next season: Blum is already signed for next year so he is on the team. He will be the backup at 3rd and also has the ability to play other positions. Wigginton will be the starter at 3rd. Berkman will start at 1st. Tejada will start at SS. Matsui will start at 2nd. They need at least one competent middle infield backup and Saccamonno is not that guy. Keep in mind that this season, they started with the 4 starters, Loretta and Blum. With that same alignment, there is no room for a 1st/3rd baseman.
After a shaky start the wolf man has looked pretty good so far. It would be nice to have him back for the end of the rotation next year. If we could add Sheets to the rotation,it would be cool too. Oswalt Sheets In no particular order: Wolf Wandy Backe or Moehler That's not great, but its an improvement.
