Hunter might as well try to steal home here lol. More chance of that being successful than of Moehler getting on base

We really needed Q to come through there but as usual, Q gets a K.

Really ****ty luck. Padres and Astros each had runners on third with one out, where almost any contact would've scored a run... K in both cases.

Moehler should really try this concept called keeping your team in the game. It's quite a novel one. In addition to our inept offense now, bah. Jimenez is pretty filthy.

Hey, Cat, what do you make of the fact that Valverde has a better WHIP than Lidge?

On a better note, Padres just tied the Brewers on a Giles solo HR.

Gagne in for the Brewers... that could be some good news. Brewers fans will riot if they lose this one.

That Valverde has given up a ton of gopher balls, but I think it's more bad luck than an indicator of his future. Valverde's HR pace (10 allowed in 64 innings) is far worse than any other season of his in the majors (except for 2005, when his sample size was 29 innings, too small to judge anything by).

Same happened with Lidge last year, to an extent. Berkman told me that Lidge had some of the worst luck he'd ever seen in a pitcher -- that every pitcher makes a mistake here and there, but when Lidge made them, it seemed like they were all hit out of the park and never went just for singles. Given more time (this season), Berkman was right, and Lidge's numbers went back to normal as his luck became more reasonable. I think that's generally happened since the break for Valverde, and it's a good reason to be optimistic about him heading to 2009...

I hear you. When did you talk to Berkman? Do you work in the baseball industry?

Alyson Footer with mlb.com has an associate reporter for each season... that was me last year. :) That's why in the Lidge threads I always talked about him hobbling around before games -- because I watched it and knew it was much worse than they were letting on.

By the way, this is so frustrating because Jimenez is so hit or miss. When he's bad, he's awful, but when he's good he has the stuff to just blow people away... and tonight is one of those nights. :(
