I fail to see how this pertains to the Rockets. Are you saying we should S&T for Chandler with a brand new multi-year contract? Charlotte's not going to S&T him unless they get a player of value in return. Would the Rockets give up someone like Jordan Hill for Chandler, and in addition to giving him likely a 4-5yrs at ~$8 mil? The answer is NO WAY IN HELL.
He's not suggesting that. He's saying Chandler may be a FA and we can sign him directly. It's an offseason FA suggestion.
Because Chandler will give up $12 for a MLE contract, when the article suggest he's becoming healthy again?
From what I remember, Chandler was the third center off the bench when Charlotte was facing Orlando, behind Ratliff and Mohammed, though maybe that was due to injuries? No idea. Anyways, how much value does he have for the Cats anyways? I actually think getting would be fine, though I don't know what value.
Yeah, this money thing is puzzling. The first thing that comes to mind is that this is BS. Assuming it's real, and Chandler is going to walk away from his Player Option for 10/11, it would be to take a long-term deal with a pretty good team, or maybe to sign with a team with a real good shot (maybe better than us) at the championship. Just looking at it from the money POV, it would make more sense for him to play this next year, do better than he has been doing recently, and get an even better contract. So this angle doesn't work. What I get is that this is BS, or money means very little to him, and he wants to sign somewhere else, even if it costs him a ton of money. That other place is either a team with a real good shot at the championship, or some freaky reason, like he's in love with the team owner's daughter or something. Maybe he just thinks he'd look good in our uniform.
Can Chandler pick up his option and then be dealt? Give them expirings and a future 2nd rounder for the guy and give him a year to see if he can get back to the top of his game. If he was healthy he would definetly do block some shots and get some rebounds.
He'd be pretty stupid to opt out of $12 million. There's no way he'd get anything near that in free agency. That being said, for cheap I'd take him as a backup to Yao.
Something else worth mentioning...even if he does opt out he won't be coming here. He'll either want a significant playing time/role to prove he's "back", or he's going to want a long term deal right off the bat. He won't find either in Houston,
Really, I think this is a nothing story, and the fact that we've given it this much focus shows how desperate we are for any kind of news or conjecture. But back to your point, we'd have to give up a bunch of salary to match, almost $10 million, which roughly works out to Jeffries, Andersen, and Taylor. This begs a couple of questions: 1) Are we sure that Chandler would do more for us than the players we'd be giving up?, and 2) Couldn't we get better players for that $12 million? We can only S&T them once... I suspect that we could throw darts and come up with better players for $12 million than Tyson Chandler.
wanna know what this is about? his contract ends next year when there is a possible lockout. those free agents will go without earning any money if there is a lockout. insuring a long term contract this summer is the safe bet. that's why all of the big time players wanted to have their contracts end this summer. another reason for him to insure a long term contract this summer is because he might play so poorly, and be so injury prone that he doesn't get a good contract next summer. his agent is thinking "lets say he's back to 100%, get a long term deal, and let him retire after it."
pipe dream if you- get/ want- him i doubt his agent will let him walk on 12mil more likely he will tell him he will get a better chance 4-a ring if he plays well till the all star break &then get traded too a contender imo he just not worth 12 mil unless he puts in a monster 1st half of a season &even then very iffy, you would have to be the right situation (desperate)
Looks like you were the only one to actually read the ESPN article. Chandler's career is on shaky ground and if he can get a team to guarantee 4yrs/$30MM, he'd be a fool if he didn't opt out. As a UFA next summer, teams may not give Chandler the time of day. Right now several teams are flush with cap space. This could be his last chance to sign a long-term contract. Throw in the potential lockout and revised CBA terms and opting out makes even more sense.
