Now that this is a legit possibility... I have no idea how this guy will do on the Rockets. Some say Swift, but I think he's a little different. Will our frontcourt be the best in the NBA?

I think it'd be great to have a player like him develop with someone like Yao and T-mac, seems like a future Trio to me.

I don't think he will develop fast enough to be considered a trio with T-Mac and Yao.
And I'm also scared he will end up similar to Swift, even though I still think Swift can break out next season if given PT.

With Tracy and Yao healthy, you can put a corpse at PF and our frontcourt is already the best in the NBA. It's our sorry backcourt that kills us.

There's a nice article about him here:

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=113506

If he's as much of a gym rat as his trainer (former NBA pro Randy Livingston) says he is, then I would be in favor of moving up for him. He'll be one of these high risk/high reward type deals. But if he panned out, it would be HUGE.

I'd probably prefer Roy, since he's less bustable, but Thomas could easily turn out to be the best player in this draft.

I think Tyrus's game is identical to Swift's , i think they are the identical player. I read an interview of thomas and he was a real arrogant *******. I think Swift is good enough at 4. Adding roy would be much more valuable than TT.

Swift is 6-9. Thomas is 6-7. We already have a short PF in Chuck Hayes. If we are going after another "athletic" PF to replace Swift, then Cedric Simmons is the better choice. Simmons is taller, stronger, more athletic, better FT shooter -- better in every category.

Of the big men only Bargnani and Aldridge make sense at #8 or better -- NOT Thomas.

I agree with you 100%, but I can't help but think of a similar article about one Malick Badiane. It said basically all of the same things - how gifted he is, how hard he works, how determined he is.... Yeah. Scares the hell out of me. I think we've got to go with somebody safe. We don't need to hit a grand slam anyway. With Yao and McGrady, we've got the superstars covered. We just need a solid third option and some role players.

I can't remember Swift in college but of course he was highly touted. I did see Thomas every game in the tournament and he impressed the hell out of me. Great athlete and the will to win. To me his mystery value would if, in case of baaaaaaack problems. and we need a starting SF for some stretch of time, could he keep the Rockets competitive.

    Value+insurance.

    Speak of the Devil

All these promises must be the wishful smokescreens for agents to get teams to feel pressured into taking their guy , since they don't have the 'promise'.

rockets are just looking at their options. if morrison is spotted in houston we'll know for sure how high or serious the rockets are in dealing a trade up.

Tyrus Thomas's future in the NBA may be at the 3 not the 4. Big gamble.

Hybrid 3/4's are all the rage. Big/Long/Athletic enough to defend the 4, but skilled enough to play the 3. Think Marion, Diaw, and Horry during crunch time in previous championship seasons.

If trading up for Thomas seems to be a serious option for the Rockets that must mean Aldridge is absolutely guarenteed to be out of range since nobody in their right mind would choose Thomas over Aldridge if given the opportunity.

I don't know about that. If they both pan out, Thomas as a 3/4 would be a better fit next to Yao than Aldridge as a 4/5. And the scouts are really playing up Thomas' intensity and motor, so that's probably another factor.

for all the harping on thomas as the next stro it's aldridge who's heart has been questioned. i wouldn't be surprised if aldridge fell in the draft. i think channing frye was in a similiar position after his pre-draft physical exam ie weights session.

I disagree. Thomas doesn't really have a position while Aldridge is a legit PF that will be a really good player for a long time.

What I don't understand is on a team desperate for immediate help how does a project player like Thomas fit into the mix? I really don't think a team like this with a coach like JVG has or should have the patience to develop a player like this.

I don't think its as much his heart as it is his lack of strength. He looked really uncomfortable when getting pushed out a step more then usually in the LSU game and didn't really show the ability to adjust to playing against a player who was stronger then him. I'm a little surprised I haven't heard more Joe Smith comparisons with him. That being said he'll eventually bulk up and be a very effective post scorer, teams will just have to wait 2yrs. or so for that to really happen.

Every draft will have some busts in the lottery picks.

Tyrus Thomas looks like the candidate this year.

He is the biggest gamble of top 6 picks.(Morrison/Aldridge/Bargani/Roy/Gay are all safer choice than him for sure.)

Tyrus = Swift of 2005-2006, if JVG handles the offense of the Rockets.
