I was playing ball at LA Fitness last night and i twisted my ankle pretty bad. It looks pretty bad... my question is should i go to the doctor? I have twisted my ankle before but not this bad. Shouldn't it heel by itself over time? pretty sure its not broke cause i wouldnt be able to walk on it right? It looks similar to the pic BUT ITS NOT ME. Anyone have any tips or answers to my question? ClutchCityReturns i know you play ball help me out ;)

I had a very similar sprain over the summer. I pretty much just stayed off of it for two days and I was finally able to put 40% of my weight on it by then. All was well within a week and a half. Just apply ice as necessary and you should be fine. There is a chance there is a hairline fracture or chip so don't rely solely on my experience.

I didnt see the pic at first either, but that looks pretty bad. I've sprained both of my ankles badly numerous times and they never looked like that. I always hated going to the doctor because they never told me anything i didnt already know, but you might wanna get that checked out. At least keep it iced tonight.

First 24 hours.. ICE ICE ICE... ice for 10 minutes, then off for 5, and repeat for about an hour, going on for 15, off 5, on for 20, off... this reducing the swelling around the area and lets nerves shrink and decreases blood flow rushing in to help heal the tissue damage... Reducing swelling in the short term is the key to mobility in the long run.

Also, if you are not allergic to them... take some anti-inflammatory meds like Advil or Motrin (ibuprofin), 2 or 3 depending on your weight, every 4 to 6 hours... If no motrin for you, then try some Aleve (naproxen sodium).

Elevate the ankle as much as possible, and rest it during that first 24 as well.

....and get to a physician if you don't see swelling go down with ice, ant-inflams and elevation/rest.

If somethings worse than a sprain, you'll know it if these do not help. Oh and, FWIW I was a trainer in high school for football and basketball... I am no doctor... do not only seek advice from this bbs!

And also, the pain is pretty intense when you ice it down... but trust me, that is always first aide on a sprain type injury.

    RICE RICE Baby!

First 24 is best, but first 48 won't hurt it to ice like this...

I remember sticking kids feet in coolers of ice for a week to treat bad sprains... talk about NUMB!

That's good on shin splints... and lingering joint pain after the initial swelling is down and the blood pooling (bruising) is noticeably dissipated.

You don't want to force pooled blood (risk of clotting) to leave the area and circulate by heating it up.

Shower for a few days... then you can do that if there seems to be bone pain...

And if there is, def seek a doc.

Remember there are 26 bones in your foot... and some of the compensating muscles are trying to cope with the area that's affected right now... Most of those 26 bones are in your metatarsals and "ankle" areas... It's not uncommon in a supinated ankle twist to possibly chip or fracture a small bone in there, or even the smaller leg bone at the ankle, the fibula.

A couple of days and your ankle will be telling you diff things than it is now.

Now the pain is the swelling and pressure, and muscle tear(s). If there is tendon or bone damage, you'll begin to pin point it as a different feeling in another day or so.

Damn that looks EXACTLY like mine except mine was a bit worse. Mine happened around last March/April 2008. Almost a year later and I still haven't played basketball. I used to play like 3-4 times a week. I think I'm finally ready to play again but I haven't even shot a ball since. Anyways......

I thought mine would heal over time so I just RICE'd it... rest, ice, compress, elevate but it took foreverrrr to heal. It took me about 7 months to finally be able to walk without any pain. Of course I didn't help the process by walking on it early and going to the gym and doing exercises even though it was mostly lifting weights sitting down.

Go get an X-ray right away. I too knew that I didn't break anything but I got X-rays after a month when I didn't see improvements. The Doc or Pod will probably confirm you have no broken bones but they'll recommend a big, expensive, fancy boot. Definitely get this.

Also my saving grace was ACUPUNCTURE. Some people say it doesn't work and some people swear by it. I'm in the latter. A severe ankle sprain is a pain in the ass especially if you're active.

Step 1) Ice. I hope you've been icing it since last night. Ice will not do any good after a while though.

Step 2) Precautionary X-ray, get boot

step 3) Acupuncture! At least do one session and see if it does any good. You'll be back if the acupuncturist is any good.

step 4) sit down on a chair lift the ankle and try to spell A, B, C, with your foot over and over.

Should be a start... I happen to have "poppy" ankles... sometimes they seeem to almost pop out when I twist them, and pop right back. I've been fortunate to not have any bone or tendon damage.

So some of my advice is from my own injuries, but most from trainer days...

My foot looked similar to the pic you posted once. Not fun.

That "RICE" acronym is a great reminder. ;)

And the boot ^ mentioned in the post above is a good idea, too. About $100 though... unless you can find a friend or relative with one. Be sure if you buy one to get a right or left universal one.

If you always ball... you may again one day fall...

From an ankle sprain. Consider it an investment.

x2 on the "A, B, C" with your foot exercise...

sometimes icing isn't the best because the tendons can move when you twisted it and if you ice it then they will tighten up in the wrong spot. which will take longer to heal.

funny you posted this.. two years ago i twisted my other ankle and i was back to playing on it after three weeks, it was never the same. i would always tweak it easy on the smallest twist. It took a whole year to get back 100%. im trying to avoid going through that again and avoid the doctor because money doesnt grow on trees, i do have Atena insurance though but even with that wouldnt xrays cost me alot?

I've never heard of Atena insurance so I don't know how it works and X-rays are expensive but were talking about your ankle here. This isn't like buying name brand cereal vs. Kroger brand and saving money. You depend upon your ankle to walk and you don't want to be cheap/frugal in a situation like this. You need to get it checked out for precautionary reasons.

    Yessir.

No time for gangrenous feets and eventual amputations .
