My friend has a 62" Phillips rear projection HDTV.
Yesterday "out of nowhere" she noticed a problem where on a certain part of the screen picture and text looks doubled. It kind of looks like you are watching a 3D film where you have to put on those weird glasses. For example if you have text...its kind of split up or doubled and one instance is white and the other is red..sometimes it tripled and there is green too...

I have no idea what could be wrong.
We tried the basics..turn on/off...check cables.
This happens with tv and dvd.

    Any ideas?

Do you have a convergence menu? That is where you would align the red, green and blue projectors.

I quickly looked at the menu yesterday and maybe I missed that option.
I will have her check again today for convergence.
Is it weird that this problem doesn't happen everywhere on the screen? Hopefully its not a hardware issue.
    Thanks

 I went through this. DO NOT OPEN THE TV, DO NOT TRY TO FIX IT YOURSELF or you'll end up messing it up and... wait a minute, I got a DLP out of that... ;) maybe IT IS a good thing...?

If you truly DO want to fix it, Google "convergence phillips" and then look through the results. There is a way to get your remote to become a CONVERGENCE remote. I believe Hitachis, like mine, can fix the convergence with a few button combinations.

It happens only on one spot of the screen because there is a grid of lines that control this, and maybe one line messed up with a combination of another one. This just caused a glitch.

You will more than likely have to get someone to replace a convergence modulator if you can't fix it yourself. More than likely, the RED lines are out of place, since you watch so much ROCKETS TV. ;)

u usually can find the convergence button on the front of the tv where the manual inputs are.

it probably has an auto convergence button

    Solution...get a DLP.
I've had my 50" HDTV Samsung DLP for just about 3 years now and have had no problems ever and have not even had to change my bulb yet.
    Perfect TV and picture.

This is not my TV and my friend cant afford another one right now. So hopefully we can get this fixed ourselves or by a tech without paying too much.

I don't recall seeing a convergence button on the front of the TV when I looked yesterday. I just remember seeing VOL up/down, CH up/down, Menu, and Power.
Also, the remote is missing and according to some instructions I found online you need it to get into the service menu so I guess I will need to get a universal remote.

Most of the posts / websites / articles I saw about this type of problem say that its caused by defective IC chip or resistors in the TV. I am not going to be messing around with anything inside of the TV and be doing any soldering. If this repair is required does anyone know who to call and how much it would cost....I never used any TV repair services before...and this TV is not under warranty.
