    Cooper blasts political rockers
    26/08/2004 - 10:17:03

Republican rocker Alice Cooper has slammed presidential hopeful John Kerry's celebrity supporters as traitors for letting politics get in the way of their music.

The School's Out singer has blasted Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews among others, who have performed in support of Democratic Kerry.

He says: "I call it treason against rock n' roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics. When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I'd run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick."

Cooper urges rock pans to pay no attention to musicians' political views.

He adds: "If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are.

"Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal.

"Besides, when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Healey? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."

Alice Cooper was the first person I ever saw in concert. It was at the Kentucky state fair back in the late 70's. My hearing hasn't been the same since.

I understand that Vincent is a pretty good golfer. Something like a 4 handicap.

Golf is Rock n' Roll all the way.

Has anyone seen the new commercial where this little girl is in a store looking p!ssed. Alice Cooper is there and he tells her "I said school's out for summer, not forever."

The lyrics do say "schools out forever" though. I'm confused.

Rock should never be about politics????

Tell that to the Who or the Beatles or U2 or the Sex Pistols and on and on and on...

Rock music is about rebelling against the conventions of society. Whether it is partying and objectifying women (80's hair bands), using drugs (um, nearly everyone) or "sticking it to the man" as Jack Black so eloquently put it in School of Rock, playing rock and roll has always been about being outside of the mainstream.

He, of all people, should get that given how many people railed against him for the way he acted and what he sung.

That isn't to say all rockers should be liberal. They shouldn't be. It just means that thinking music should be disassociated with ideological thinking is ridiculous.

Yeah, most of what he said was pretty stupid. But I can't really disagree with this.

Do these rock stars actually believe they're affecting anyone's vote? Are they?

I outgrew "political bands" after high school. I listen to music to escape real life for a while, not to have it shoved down my throat.

Also, there's something about being preached to by a bunch of millionaire musicians that just rubs me the wrong way...

Alice Cooper needs to stick to playing golf.

Someone should tie him up and force him to listen to a Bob Dylan album from the early 60s.

    Fool's out....forever!

it's the same with country "music" stars.
Ricky Skaggs has his own pro-Bush tour with other country singers.

it's like that episode of South Park

When I think of political bands, I think of The Clash, the Dicks, Dead Kennedys, even Bob Marley, etc. They had passion and were not rich.
