Okay, who is the greatest point guard of all time? I've got it narrowed down to Magic Johnson and John Flopton, and although I'd love to discount Flopton altogether, I'm trying to be unbiased. I compiled their career statistics:

    MAGIC:
    19.5 pts, 7.2 rebs, 11.2 ast, 1.9 stl
    FLOPTON:
    13.3 pts, 2.7 rebs, 11.0 ast, 2.3 stl

However, then I decided that since Magic retired after 13 years, he never really had the opportunity to fall off, as Stockton does (and is!). I came up with this:

    MAGIC
    19.5 pts, 7.2 rebs, 11.2 ast, 1.9 stl
    FLOPTON
    13.6 pts, 2.7 rebs, 11.5 ast, 2.4 stl

I still give the advantage to Magic, as the assists were pretty comparable and Stockton had the slight edge in steals, but Magic dominated him in points and boards (and titles [IMG]).

So what do you guys think? Does longevity in a career mean a lot? Can Magic really be blamed for only playing 13 years? What do you think?

Oh, by the way, that second grouping of stats reflects Stockton's first 13 seasons in the league, and discounts his other, less-impressive recent seasons. SORRY! [IMG]

All Time??? Oscar Robertson by a long shot.
When Oscar played, they only recorded assists if the pass lead directly to a basket. Nowadays they give an assist if you pass and the guy shoots 5 min later. Pull up Oscar's stats, you will see he was the greatest of all time.

    Bob--

My bad. I'm one of these young "punks" who is too damn young to appreciate (or remember) players like O. [IMG]

But let's say you HAD to choose from Tragic or Flopton. Popular concensus from most people I know narrow it down to those two. Thanks for the info, though.

If you're asking me who I would select if I were drafting an "all-universe" team and both were on the board, there's no way I'd pick Stockton over Magic. Magic was the complete package who could do it all. He was more complete than Jordan (uh oh). His defense wasn't as great as Jordan's, but then I doubt Jordan could play center or PF and rack up 40+ points and double-digit rebs while still dishing out assists.

I think Magic was just as good as Stockton if not better in decision-making skills. He ran/orchestrated the fast break better than anyone I've seen since his time in the NBA.

Tragic had five titles and could take over a game anytime anywhere he wanted to. Stockton didnt do any of that. If Flopton didnt have Malone on his team, he wouldnt even be where he is rite now. Magic on the other hand would be just as great even without JaBlunt.

I can't really judge who the best PG of all-time is, but if we're talking about the last 20 years, then Magic, Stockton and Isiah Thomas would be right up there in my list. I don't think Magic being #1 is really an issue, but the next point guard comparison is a lot more interesting. It's really hard to compare a protypical PG to Johnson anyways, seeing as he was an 6"8" freak of nature. In my opinion, the chances of seeing the next Micheal Jordan are far greater than seeing the next Magic Johnson (sorry, Penny a'int it).

Anyways, I ask you this; who was a better player between Isiah and John? What other point guards would make your list? Remember, I'm talking about '80-'00.
